“How to” Speeches

The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn how to write, practice, and deliver a formal speech to your peers. It will serve as a great segue for your SEI presentation next year.

You must present on the day you sign up for, if you are absent, you must be ready to present the next day. This is going under “class work” which is 25% of your grade.

Requirements:

A well-delivered speech between 3-4 minutes in length. The topic of your speech will be left up to you, but should instruct your audience on “how to do something.” You will first explain in 3-4 minutes, how to do something in detail, explaining every step in detail following the speech rubric (see below). After your speech, you will actually demonstrate how to do it. You may bring in appropriate (approved) props, but no video or visual media allowed on this assignment, so it must be something you can show us in class.

You must also have a visual poster board to communicate your ideas effectively. These may be charts, pictures, diagrams, etc. but must be clearly intelligible from the back of the class, and must be alluded to at least once, in the course of the speech. (NO power points-poster boards only).

Your speech should be almost memorized. You may use 2 note cards with less than 12 words each, they should only have writing on one side, and should only be glanced at during your presentation.
