Data Collection and Graphing Project
You and a partner will create questions for surveys, collect data, and turn the data into 3 different graphs. All components of this project will be displayed on a visually pleasing poster or tri-fold project board. Please read the directions carefully to make sure you are completing all components.
Item / Description / Materials / Technology Needed / Recommended Completion Date / PointsCreate a question & a prediction / ü You will need to make a decision on what 3 things you want to survey and create a question about each: (3)
- 1 question must be categorical (there can be overlap)
- 1 question must compare responses.
- 1 question must have a # response.
- Make sure you get your questions approved
ü You will need to write a statement (3-5 sentences) telling about the population you want to survey (at least 50 people) and a prediction about what you think each set of data will reveal. (3)
ü You may write on Google Docs or paper. But questions must be approved by Tuesday, April 8, 2014 / Google Docs / 6
Frequency Chart / ü You will need to fill out the frequency charts attached, or create your own to show the data collected.
ü You will need to retype your frequency chart for your final display (or write neatly) / Frequency chart attached or Google Docs / 6 (2 points for each chart)
Organize & Graph Data / ü You will create 3 different graphs to display your data from the options provided. Be sure to choose the graph that best represents the data for each question.
ü You will create two graphs using the websites below and the other graph will be drawn. One of your graphs must be a double bar graph.
ü Your graphs will represent the results from your frequency chart and include all required components of a graph. (title, labels, key…)
ü You will need to go to this website: http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/createagraph/
ü You may also use Excel to create graphs
ü Or you may use this website if you would like to make a Venn Diagram
ü http://www.lucidchart.com
ü Follow the instructions attached to complete the online graphs.
Types of Graphs You May Use:
· Circle/pie graph
· Double bar graph
· Line graph
· Venn Diagram
· Stem and leaf plot
· Scatter plot / Internet, Google Docs, and Art Supplies / 15 (5 points for each graph)
Data Analysis / After you have completed your graphs, write a paragraph for each graph explaining what you learned from collecting this data. Paragraphs should be neatly organized and typed.
ü Tell how you went about doing your survey, including how you chose the people you surveyed and when and where you collected your data. Explain whether or not the data would have changed if you had surveyed different people at a different time and place. Why? Be as specific as possible. (7)
ü Tell 3 things you have learned from the data collected…support your findings and use your graph as evidence. (7) / Google Docs / 14
