Assignment Sheet: A-Level Module G481: Forces and Motion
1.2.3Equilibrium
The problems listed are given as suggestions from which your normal examples can be chosen. You need not feel bound by these if you find other books more useful. NOTE; Some of the ‘Fullick’ and ‘Bath’ bookwork is at a high level. Do not be disheartened if you experience difficulties, it was included to stretch the most able of you. Try it and if you can’t do it, ask. Assessment questions, however, are compulsory.
Work not handed in by the given deadlines and without an extension agreed by the class teacher, will result in your being asked to leave the lesson. A Concern Report/IBehave will then be sent to Mr Soanes. A student should arrange to meet with the teacher for discussion prior to the next lesson and ensure the work is completed by that lesson.
Learning Objectives
- Draw and use a triangle of forces to represent the equilibrium of three forces acting at a point on an object
- State that the centre of gravity of an object is a point where the entire weight of an object appears to act
- Describe a simple experiment to determine the centre of gravity of an object
- Explain that a couple is a pair of forces that tends to produce rotation only
- Define and apply the torque of a couple
- Define and apply the moment of force
- Explain that both the net force and net moment on an extended object in equilibrium is zero
- Apply the principle of moments to solve problems including the example of the human forearm
- Select and use the equation for density ρ = m/V
- Select and use the equation for pressure – p = F/A where F is the force normal to the area A
