I.ROLEHead Coach, New Zealand Women’s National Basketball Team
II.RESPONSIBLE TOBBNZ Chief Executive
The Head Coach is responsible for all coaching functions associated with their national team programme in accordance with the budget, policies and procedures of Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ).
The Head Coach in consultation with BBNZ national office staff assists in the planning, scheduling, implementation and evaluation of the National Team programme. Upon request, the Head Coach provides input into the general direction and philosophy of the National Talent Programme (NTP) to promote continuity within and throughout all aspects of the NTP.
The Head Coach works in conjunction with the Manager, Coaching & Development, the National Teams Coordinator, and sport science and medicine providers, with respect to the ongoing identification, development, training and monitoring of their national squad and athletes.
III.ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Coach must work in close and positive cooperation with BBNZ’s national office staff, and BBNZ appointed sport medicine and sport science providers.
IV.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Administration and Planning
- In consultation with BBNZ national office staff, provide input into the planning, scheduling, implementation and evaluation of the team programme (based on term of appointment).
- Attend all Team related events and functions.
- Participate in planning, evaluation and other meetings related to the NTP.
- Lead the team programme when on tour and manage staff and athletes while on tour.
- Maintain effective and regular communication with the BBNZ national office and members of the Team staff with respect to the planning and operation of the team programme.
- Establish and maintain communication with the athletes regarding their individual availability and physical preparation for the programme.
- Provide input into the development of sport science plans for the national team
- Provide in-depth analysis of individual players’ performance as well as their future prospects to create and maintain their Individual Performance Plan.
Developing a Culture
- Develop and instil a “culture of excellence” within the Team
- Assist BBNZ personnel in the communication and implementation of the NTP.
- Act as an ambassador for New Zealand and BBNZ, conduct oneself in a professional manner and demand appropriate behavior and appearance for members of the team.
- Attend all sport science, sport medicine and general information sessions scheduled by BBNZ in relation to the programme.
- Evaluate and monitor the progress of the athletes throughout the programme and at the conclusion of programme activities provide the athletes with an overview of their areas of strength and areas for improvement.
- Be available, if requested, to represent BBNZ at NTP initiatives to speak on behalf of the national team programme (tournaments, camps, clinics, etc.)
Team Staff
- Participate in the selection of the assistant coaches for the national team programme.
- In consultation with the BBNZ office, conduct annual evaluations on national team personnel and provide feedback to the respective individuals at the conclusion of each programming year.
- Direct, and supervise all national team staff
Coaching Duties
- In consultation with BBNZ and assistant coaches, lead the identification and selection of athletes for the Team programme.
- Identify athlete strengths and weakness and assist in the preparation of a holistic training programme that will accelerate the athletes’ development
- Evaluate and monitor the progress of the athletes throughout the year
- In conjunction with the Assistant Coaches, develop and maintain a comprehensive depth chart of all athletes who have the potential to participate in the national team programme.
- Maintain ongoing communication with the athletes during and out-of-season, and advise BBNZ in a timely manner of any problems an athlete might be experiencing
- Identify athletes for participation in NTP initiatives
- In conjunction with BBNZ staff, team staff, sport science/medicine providers, etc, prepare an annual plan for the team.
- Perform all coaching duties within the scope and operation of the national team programme, including but not limited to:
- Planning and periodization
- Athlete and staff selection and communication
- Goal setting
- Tactical and technical preparation
- Practice planning and preparation
- Game preparation, management and evaluation
- International scouting
- Media interviews relevant to team performance
Reporting
- Prepare individual evaluations for each athlete, highlighting the athletes’ strengths and areas for improvements.
- Submit a programme evaluation to the BBNZ office within 30 days of the conclusion of each year’s programme and where necessary present the report to the designated bodies as requested by BBNZ (e.g. Board, HPSNZ, NZOC, etc.)
Other
- Where reasonably requested attend basketball events for the purpose of promoting BBNZ, athlete identification, coach identification, networking, communicating regarding BBNZ and NTP initiatives.
- Participate in coaches’ and/or players’ clinics on behalf of BBNZ
V.WORLD ANTI-DOPING CODE
From January 1, 2015 a revised World Anti-Doping Code comes into force bringing major changes to New Zealand’s Sport Anti-doping Rules. There is a greater focus in the new Code on education to prevent doping.
As a BBNZ representative you are required to actively support anti-doping programmes and provide anti-doping education to our athletes, in conjunction with Drug Free Sport NZ. This includes formally adopting New Zealand’s updated Sport Anti-Doping Rules to ensure that athletes and staff are bound by these rules.
VI.FINANCIAL AND BUDGET CONTROL
The Coach is required to establish, with BBNZ national office staff, an annual budget for the players and Team programme and be aware of and understand BBNZ financial procedures, ensuring in all cases that authorisation for any and all expense is received from BBNZ prior to any purchase.
VII.MEDIA AND CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS
The Coach is expected to:
- Respond in a timely manner to the media, via BBNZ’s media and communications staff, and help BBNZ develop and maintain a positive media presence.
- Assist BBNZ in the promotion of sponsor’s obligations where necessary (acknowledge sponsor support when speaking with media, wear appropriate sponsor footwear and apparel at all times while representing BBNZ, introduce sponsors at camps, etc.).
