General description
The trundle wheel is a common tool used to measure distances. Students can enjoy various activities while mastering the ability to measure length by counting the “clicks” as they walk.
The trundle wheel is adjustable to the following heights:
- Lowest height- 768 mm (30.25")
- Middle height - 845 mm (33.25")
- Highest height- 927 mm (36.5")
Orientation
The trundle wheel consists of a height adjustable handle, a single wheel on the end with a click counter.
Parts supplied
- Wheel section
- Upper arm piece with handle
- Lower arm section with click count piece attached
- Large plastic screw, cylinder section and nut
- Small plastic screw and nut
Assembly
Please note: Sighted assistance may be required.
Take the upper arm piece and the lower section. On the long section of the lower arm and the upper piece are 3 holes. On the opposite end of the lower section is the protruding, click counter box section. This sits on top of a 2 prong, fork-like section.
At one end of the lower piece is a hollow tubular section. Insert the upper section into this tube; it will only insert one way around. Align the holes for the desired height; push the smaller screw through the aligned holes and tighten the nut onto the screw the other side.
Locate the tactile side of the wheel. There are dashes at centimetre intervals and triangles at every quarter metre.
Turn the handle section so that the protruding counter section is facing upwards. Insert the wheel tactile side down between the 2 prongs (it must go this way otherwise the trundle wheel won’t click/count). The hole in the middle of the wheel should align with the holes in the 2 prongs. Insert the screw into the cylinder piece and then push both pieces through the aligned hole. Place the screw on the other end of the screw and tighten. The trundle wheel is now assembled.
Using the product
The clicker box section has a rotary dial that protrudes out of the side. Facing the end of the rotary dial, rotate it clockwise. It should make a clicking sound as you rotate. If you are rotating the wrong way, it won’t click. Rotate this dial to return the counter to zero.
To measure, hold the trundle wheel so that the click counter is on the right side of the unit. If you hold it the other way around, the unit won’t count the clicks. Walk along with the trundle wheel, holding the handle with the wheel running along the floor. Each click represents a metre in distance.
Please note: This may require sighted assistance. Once at zero, students can count the number of clicks for metres.
