New Laboratory Manager

Job Summary: This position is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising a laboratory operation. Also conducts and interprets complex microbiological tests.
Primary Job Responsibilities: (Select and/or modify these job responsibilities for your position)
1. Conducts purchasing, budget-tracking, and inventory management for the laboratory.
2. Manages activities of assigned staff. Oversees or conducts training and new employee orientation. Manages workload and scheduling.
3. Responds to grievances of patients as well as employee-related issues. Handles performance management issues and participates in hiring.
4. Ensures maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment. Manages quality assurance procedures.
5. Establishes and implements written operating procedures and protocols that are in compliance with OSHA standards for HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B and Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure.
6. Ensures adequate safety and compliance with standard operating procedures.
7. Researches new tests, new procedures, and new technology in the Medical Technology field. Initiates discussion with medical and administrative staff about new methodologies, tests, and procedures as appropriate.
8. Requests new equipment as needed and develops new laboratory procedures.
9. Performs microbiological laboratory testing and interprets findings in assigned specialty areas.
10. Measures and monitors key performance areas of laboratory. Recommends ways to promote continuous quality improvement, customer service, and employee satisfaction.
11. Develops and directs the statistical and record keeping software functions of the laboratory.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree, preferably in microbiology, medical technology, or health sciences. Master's degree in health administration preferred.
Experience: Minimum five years of experience in progressively responsible positions in laboratory, including two years supervisory experience.
Other Requirements: American Medical Technologist certification.
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
1. Knowledge of principles and techniques of clinical laboratory testing procedures/practices and of microbiology, including medical mycology; mycobacteriology; enteric, sexually transmitted and environmental bacteriology, parasitology and virology.
2. Knowledge of medical terminology, communicable diseases, and environmental health issues.
3. Knowledge of laboratory regulations, including quality control of media and reagents, laboratory safety, laboratory documentation requirements, sterilization requirements, and laboratory equipment.
4. Knowledge of applicable microbiological testing techniques, including tests for AIDS, rubella, hepatitis, and syphilis.
5. Knowledge of planning, budgeting, quality control, customer service, and employee supervision, development and training.
6. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and practices as they relate to laboratory operations.
Skills:
1. Skill in performing laboratory tests.
2. Skill in project planning, laboratory operations, and budgetary control.
3. Skill in using computers for database management, testing, and record-keeping functions.
4. Skill in analyzing data and presenting ideas and information both orally and in writing.

6. Ability to competently use Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and appropriate practice management software.
7. Equipment Operated: Standard laboratory equipment including various testing instruments.
Work Environment: Combination of laboratory and office settings. Exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards, toxic substances, and other conditions common in clinical laboratory environment.
