Course Description and Purpose
This course requires students to the development of the United States from the end of the Reconstruction period through modern day America. While this is a Dual Credit class, students are still responsible for knowing the South Carolina US History and Constitution State Standards, which can be located at or in your interactive notebook. Dual Credit students will take the SC US History and Constitution End of Course exam after the completion of HIS 202 in the spring of 2010. Similarly, HGTC has a list of desired student outcomes, which can be found on Mr. Powley’s course homepage.

Interactive Notebooks
The SC US History and Constitution standards are broken down into a number of sub-standards known as indicators. Each of these indicators will have a series of questions, definitions and small assignments based on key vocabulary, individuals and/or understandings. Students that took the 2008-2009 US History End of Course Exam (EOC) stated that it was these details that were on the EOC. The interactive notebook is essential for the successful completion of the course and the EOC.
The interactive notebook will be collected the on the day of each test. The average for each notebook collection and the overall product will be weighed 35% of the overall average. This means that a student that chooses not to complete the notebook will receive at most a 65% overall average or a D letter grade.
Tests
Students will take three (3)exams as noted on the course schedule. Some standards are longer than others so students should be sure to check the class schedule below for the day of each test.
Each test will be CUMULATIVE, which means content from previous standards will be eligible for every test. Half of each test will be new questions based on the current standard and will be taken without the assistance of any outside materials. The other half of each test will be from the past standards and students will be allowed to use their Interactive Notebooks to look up the answers to these questions. This places an increased importance on organization of the Interactive Notebook. Since HIS 202 is a dual credit course and the EOC will test material from both HIS 202 and HIS 201, content from both courses will be found on the HIS 202 exams.
Interactive Notebook (Binder) Checks
All students are expected to maintain a well organized AVID binder. For HIS 202 this organization takes the form of the Interactive Notebook. At least once a week the teacher will check the binder/Interactive Notebook. Since Cornell Notes and the Teacher Created Questions will be graded when the Interactive Notebooks are collected the Binder Checks will check for completion of the indicators. The date that the indicators are due are noted on the schedule below. For example, indicator “6.5” questions are to be completed by February 10th.
The Grade Scale Conversion
The college letter score will convert to a high school number grade. A = 96 B=88 C= 80 D=73 F=61
Make-up/Latework Policy:
Students are expected to meet all deadlines for all classworkto avoid receiving unsatisfactory grades. Discuss with teachers any concerns within 24-hours of due dates if additional help is needed. Remember, college professors generally accept no excuses for late assignments.
HIS 201 is a dual credit college class and is treated as such. Students are expected to complete assignments on time and with the best quality of work. Excuses such as “my printer does not work”, “my flash drive broke” and other similar statements are not acceptable and will not excuse a late assignment.
If the student is present and fails to submit an assignment the student will have two (2) school days to produce the assignment. If the assignment is produced within this 2 day period the student has the ability to score a maximum of 75%(C letter grade) on the assignment. If the student fails to produce the assignment the student will receive a zero (0) on the assignment. The student will not be able to make up the assignment at a later date. Exceptions can be made in appropriate circumstances at the teacher’s discretion.
Attendance Policy
Please see the Early College Student Handbook for details.
Student Ethics and Responsibility
Any student caught cheating or plagiarizing can be given a grade of zero (0) and is subject to further disciplinary actions according to the ECH and HGTC handbooks.
Cell Phones
Cell phones are to be off and away at the beginning of the school day and may not be turned on until students leave the school building.
End of Course Note
Students attending the Early College High School will be expected to take the SC End of Course Exam for US History. The exam consists of 50 Multiple Choice questions and will cover all 10 SC State High School standards. This is NOT an optional exam.
Student Conduct Expectations
Students are expected to abide by the Honor Code as well as the rules and regulations in the Student Guide. The Student’s Guide is located in the front of the student’s agenda as well as on the ECH website. Student offenses will be handled on a case-by-case basis according to the offense and the district and school guidelines found in the Student Guide.
