Survey Project

Project Overview:

Think about a numerical, statistical survey question that you would like to be the focus of your survey project. The question must be one that can be answered by collecting data. You will conduct your survey by gathering at least 30 pieces of data. In the end, you will graph, analyze, and summarize your survey results.

Part 1: Plan for yourSurvey

  • What will your survey be about?
  • What specific statistical question will you ask to conduct your survey? Will the survey result in numerical data? (If not, adjust your question.)
  • Is your survey question clear and answerable? Can you gather the information easily?
  • How will you gather your data? What method will you use for data collection?
  • Will your survey sample berandom or biased? How will you know?
  • How will you organize your data as you collect it?How will you know that you have at least 30 pieces of data?
  • What do you think the data will show when you have completed this project? Make a prediction about the outcome of your survey.

Part 2: Collect the Data

  • Collect data about your question. Think about how you will do this in an organized and practical manner. Remember, you will need to collect data at least 30 pieces of data.

Part 3: Display the Data

  • Make a graphical display of the data you collected. This may be made by hand or by computer. Be sure to include a title and labels so that anyone reading the display will know exactly what it is representing.

Part 4: Analyze the Data

  • Determine the measures of centers for your data (mean, median, and mode).

Which measure of center best describes your data?

  • Make note of any outliers or other irregularities in your data.
  • Interpret at least one aspect of your data by using percentages.

Part 5: Summarize the Data

Write a one-paragraph summary of your survey:

  • What are the results of your survey? What does thedata tell you about your original question?
  • Does your data represents a random or biased sample? Explain your thinking.
  • Were the results of your survey what you expected? Why or why not?

See the back of this paper for the score rubric.

Your Survey Project will be scored according the rubric below:

Description / Points
Survey Question / The survey question is:
  • Numerical
  • Statistical
  • Clearly written
/ 3
Data Collection /
  • The collected data is arranged in an organized way
  • At least 30 pieces of data have been collected
/ 5
Graphical Display /
  • The data isaccurately displayed in a graph
  • A title and label(s) are included on the graph
  • Color is used to enhance the graph
/ 5
Data Analysis /
  • The mean, median, and mode are accurately determined
  • A logical explanation is given for which measure of center (mean, median, or mode) best describes the data
  • Outliers and/or other irregularities in the data are identified
  • At least one aspect of the data is interpreted using percentages
/ 7
Summary / The one-paragraphsummary includes:
  • A description of the results of the survey.
  • An explanation about whether the survey you conducted is random or biased.
  • An explanation of whether or not the results are as you expected.
