Background

Building on the success of Hong Kong's staging of the equestrian events of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, The Hong Kong Jockey Club committedtotal funding of HK$50 million at the end of 2008 to establish and run aClub-sponsored Equestrian Team and Junior Equestrian Team for the past5 years.

New HKJC Equestrian Sponsorship

To continue supporting the development of local equestrian sport, the Club had decided to extend its equestrian sponsorship for another 3½ years to 31 December 2016, with annual funding of HK$20 million to HK$24 million.

The sponsorship scope is also expanded to cover the followings:

(1) The Hong Kong Jockey Club Equestrian Team

  • The sponsorship is extendedfrom four riders to five. Besides Patrick Lam, Samantha Lam, Kenneth Cheng and Jacqueline Lai from the original team, Raena Leung will join the team (see riders’ profiles).
  • Performance awards will be introduced to encourage outstanding accomplishments in major competitions such asthe 2013 National Games, 2014 Asian Games and 2016 Olympic Games.

(2) Establishment of new position: HKJC Equestrian Team Coach and Manager

  • Lars Meyer zu Bexten, a member of the German national training team,will beappointed as the HKJC Equestrian Team Manager.
  • He will be responsible for establishing equestrian-specific assessment standards andacts as the coach of the Team, overseeingteam members’ progress, scheduling competitions,and conducting clinics.

(3) Establishment of new position:HKEF Sports Development Director

  • The HKEF will designate a qualified Sports Development Director to work with the HKJC Equestrian Team Coach and Manager in providing regular updates on local riders' performances.
  • The Sports Development Director will oversee youth development and the HKJC Junior Equestrian Squad.

(4) Leasing horses for the HKJC Equestrian Team

  • The Club will provide annual fundingto lease horses for the Team's use. The HKJC Equestrian Team Coach and Manager will help decide on selection of horsesand progress evaluation.

(5) The HKJC Junior Equestrian Training Squad

  • Eight local young riders, aged between 13 and 17, have been selected as members of the 2013/14 Hong Kong Jockey Club Junior Equestrian Training Squad, receiving professional and systematic equestrian training from the Club until December 2014.
