My Post For the Money

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fostercare/message/11510

I know this has been a question that has come up many times. However, if
one considers, that for some children have, you must work 24/7 for their
care and/or protection, I would have to say NO.
Also, for reference, I would like to share a PDF File that compares
rates by states:

Re: Foster Care Support Are Foster Parents in it for the Money??

You have got to be out of your mind if you think foster parents are doing it for
money. Done right it ends up costing alot more then we make. The pure emontional
hell for some of us would cost millions if the states paid for the damages they
do to foster parents. Not only do we care for the kids 24/7 We all have times
when we have to go thur hell with some social workers they lie like rugs they
do what ever it takes to close there cases if it hurts some kids they do not
care as long as they close the case. Kids need alot more then the STATES give.
Lets start with decent Lawyers when some kids come into care they need one to
protect them because they dont have a voice other then good foster parents who
try hard and lose because of the system. Anyone thinking they are anything more
then a care giver to these wonderful kids is kidding themselfs. Adoptions are
few and far between so when someone says we do it for money I have to say Hell
no we do it to
make a differance in a childs life when we do it long enough we realize we dont
really make any differance and are treated like a third class citizens . God
Bless the Children and there foster parents who are still trying to help the
kids .

I'm not sure this is correct. The contract we were given (Hillsborough County
Florida) gave us a rate of $369 0-5 years, $380 6-12 years, and $455 13 and up.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fostercare/message/11519

Hey .. I'm in Hillsborough County Florida too! We got the same
rate. We only take 0-5 basically so $369 is $12.13 per day. Mostly
we take drug addicted newborns. Thankfully we get WIC for the
formula. But diapers are very expensive. When we first started, it
was very, very expensive gathering all the things newborns needed ...
cribs, blankets, boy/girl clothes ages 0 and up (they grow fast),
bouncy seats, swings, strollers, car seats, etc. etc. Eventually, we
got a stockpile of all these "re-usable" supplies and felt like we
started to catch up a bit.
Seriously, my Mom boarded a very small dog a bit ago at it was $16
per day plus she had to supply the food too. (In the same county BTW)
Does that hit anyone else weird? LOL

My reply

Hi Beth,

When on considers that the ASPCA was created before the Government Child Services, may not be wierd. Not to mention animals may have more rights. I know I am being sarcastic.

But did you know according to an older book I read on the development of our country from it's beginning to 1912 that Child work laws and insisting children go to school were put into being, not because it was to protect the child, but most business owners said young children cost them more than older workers.

i have heard of fp who are in it for the money they are usually the ones who
take in like 6 or more teens who are developmentally delayed and dont do
anything for them but at 6+ kids say at a rate of 46.63 per day per child
that is over $17,000 per child over $102,000 for 6 per year. non taxable.
and if you only take the mildly affected it isnt much work for lots of
money.
me i take medically challenged infants so they are lots of work.

I think I have personally run into a few of those ... but in my
experience, it's the few and far between. I also know what you mean
about taking the ones who are a lot of work as I took the medically
fragile newborns that should have gone to a medical foster home but
they didn't have enough of those and I'd take them. Micropreemie and
drug addicted became my expertise.
Funny - one time they placed a 2 month old healthy child with me for
2 nights shelter care and I was shocked at how little work she
was!!! And the cry ... it was actually sweet and not that bone
chilling shrill of a crack addicted baby. She didn't recoil from
touch. It was then that I realized she was my FIRST healthy
placement. It was then that I realized just how much extra
work "medically challenged" newborns can be. But I keep taking them!

I know there are foster parents around here who do it for the money which
boggles my mind. I had a 15 year old overnight as they looked for a long term
placement for her. (I had littles and wasn't doing teens.) She came from a
foster home and had her shoes in her hands. When I asked her why she showed me
her feet. They were full of blisters. Her shoes were too small and her foster
parents wouldn't buy her any. Pathetic! If I hadn't gotten her at 9:00pm, had
littles in bed, and she wasn't leaving at 7am, I would have bought her some
myself. I was so disappointed that I couldn't, but the caseworker was going to
the next day.
I know I'm not in it for money. I got a 6mo old and 8 year old Friday. I bought
diapers, formula, baby food, a little something for each, a dresser for the boys
room, and they are leaving tomorrow to a relative's. Do you think the $15 or so
a day I'll get for each will even cover what I spent this weekend??? Let alone
the fact that we had to skip a trip to visit family we had planned. I think
not! :)

Hi Beth,
I would love to talk with you as we are planning to take in the same age as you.
We were told in our training that once we were licenced there was a store with
formula, diapers, meats, linens etc. at very low prices that we would be allowed
to shop at. Have you been there?

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fostercare/message/11518

In Texas it is not based on ages. It is based on "Level of Care". There is
Basic meaning no issues and it is around $25.00 per day. Not sure of the
exact amount as I don't do Basic kids. Then there is Moderate which is
$35.00 per day and then Specialized which is $48.00 per day. We also have an
Intensive level that can be in-home and it is way up there. I don't do
Intensive either, but those are usually in treatment facilities. Texas has
some homes with extensive training to handle Intensive kids. They are few
and far between though. Specialized and higher can be in Residential
Treatment Facilities.

In my state you COULD do it for the money, and unfortunately I know foster
parents who do that. (drives me absolutely batty).
State pays $24 per day for straight reimbursement, Annual clothing allowance of
$300, plus state will pay for daycare up to $19 per full day, $12 half (not sure
how accurate those numbers are, since I don't use it and it's been a while).
So try out this scenario - foster parent gets two children ($1440 per month),
puts the kids in full-time daycare, which ends up costing foster parent about
$100 per month out of pocket. Foster parent keeps their $35,000 per year full
time job.
These parents rarely attend the team meetings, court hearings, or case
staffings. And they have the perfect reasoning, they just can't take that much
time off work for all the meetings and appointments that foster kids have. The
counselors and therapists can pick the kids up and return them to their daycare.
They are also picked up and transported to and from the bio parent visits. Kids
get to daycare at 7-7:30 am and get picked up at 6 pm.
So in actuality, foster parent takes care of the kids for one hour int he
morning before daycare. FP picks the kiddos up in time for dinner, bathes them,
and puts them to bed at approximately 8pm.
Meanwhile, foster parent gets a check for over $17,000 per year.
Off my soapbox. (well, for a minute, anyway)
