PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Each year members of our unit elect a slate of five to serve a three-year term as CBA Board of Trustees members. During the first meeting as a new board, officers for the coming year are chosen. Our unit officers for 2004 are as follow: Joseph Lutz-President; Steve Megerle-Vice President; Patti English- Recording Secretary; Joy Norris-continuing as Executive Secretary; and Bill Higgins-remaining as Treasurer. Other key appointments are: Pat Newman-Zero Tolerance Chairman; Shirley Levy-Mentor/Mentee Chairman; and Jerry Violetta-building maintenance.
If any of you wish to observe our board in operation, our meetings are held at the Bridge Center the second Tuesday of every month commencing at 5:30 PM. You are welcome to observe, but if you wish to address the board it will be necessary to submit your request for a spot on the agenda to me at least one week prior to the meeting.
Summing up the year 2003 -- our membership was almost exactly the same in numbers, our table count was almost exactly the same as prior years, and our financial position remains strong. What we really need is to grow our membership and participation in our local games. If each of us would play in just one more game each month, and if all of us would attempt to bring newcomers to the game, you would be surprised at what that boost would do for all of us who currently support the greatest game you can play.
Some of you might invite a new player to play with you in the upcoming Mentor/Mentee games beginning May 23rd. Watch for announcements to be posted soon at the Bridge Center about this summer’s Mentor/Mentee program.
Joseph Lutz

From the Awards Chairman
Check out the Rookie of the Year trophy that is in the alcove by the front door of the Bridge Center. All the nameplates on it have been replaced and now there’s space for many more. It looks great! The CBA appreciates the excellent work done by Steve Finkelstein of M R TROPHY.
The CBA also extends a big thank you to Barbara and Steve Levinson. Steve’s MONMOUTH JEWLERS provides at cost all the cups for the CBA’s new Life Masters, and then he and Barbara donate the engraving for each cup. What a great saving, time and money, for the CBA Board and members!
And lastly, thanks to Ed Lee for all the winners’ certificates.
A BRIDGE PUZZLE: "Pulo do Gato"
Do you doubt it is possible to bid and make a 7S contract redoubled missing the Spade ace and another ace? (No, no one revoked.) If you do, you are wrong, because they say it happened at Niteroi. Niteroi is a city close to Rio de Janeiro, where strange things use to happen, such as birds flying backwards and politicians saying the truth. (By the way, “pulo do gato” means “the cat's jump”.)
16
The hands were:
North
S KQxxxx
H xxx
D Ax
C Qx
South
S Jxxxxx
H ----
D KQ
C AKxxx
South opened 1S and North bid 3S. South bid 4NT and North (a RKC player) responded 5S, showing 2 key cards + trump Q. South took it as 3 aces and duly bid 7S.
West’s hand was:
S A
H AK
D Txxxxx
C xxxxx
Therefore West doubled. South redoubled with alacrity, because he always took doubles of his contracts as a personal offense and wanted to make West regret such behaviour.
The opening lead was naturally the H ace, which was ruffed. And the hand was played in a complete cross ruff -- after declarer cashed his top winners in each suit, he took 13 tricks.
I know you are wondering why the trump ace did not take a trick. It is due to the cat's jump. This hand was played in a bridge club in Niteroi. A cat jumped and scared an old lady and she let one card fall from the plastic device which holds them. Someone came to help but put it in the wrong slot.
I ask myself whether you noticed that the West hand has 14 cards. So West followed to all 13 tricks and was left with the trump ace in his hand.
The Tournament Director was called and ruled that the contract was fulfilled redoubled and that West should be blamed for not counting his cards before playing.
It is a simple story after all. I do not know whether the director’s ruling was correct, but what passes in a director’s head is always a surprise to common people.
Compliments of Veber Teixeira, an online bridge player from Brazil
