*Counting steps – locate the number of footprints in the snow

*Make a large snowman-use for counting/color concepts

*Discovery-use clear plastic cups filled with ice cubes. Place the cups in the

window and observe what happens.

*Songs: “I’m a Little Snowman”…(I’m a Little Tea Pot)

*Compare and Contrast: Look at the pictures in the story.

Centers(Small group, fine motor, art)

*Snowman puzzle with knobs

*Snowman sequencing – process of melting

*Size concepts – small, medium, large using snowmen

*Transferring cotton balls with tongs

*Snowflake matching

*Child size snowmen (trace around the child) add cut out boots, hat, scarf, wallpaper mittens, and facial features. This can be a week long activity.

*Letter “R” book modified to each child’s needs.

*Ice cube painting with powdered tempera paint. Can make ice cubes with popsicle sticks frozen into ice, like popsicles. Sprinkle powder on paper and move the ice cubes over the powder.

*Snowman picture using packing peanuts, tiny marshmallows, cotton balls

-add artificial snow sprinkles or clear glitter

Creative (sensory, gross motor)

*Build a snowman with 2 sizes of white garbage bags. Stuff the bags with news paper and have children add a hat, scarf, paper buttons and facial features.

*Flannel board snowman – children add the pieces. Use a mystery bag to hold the flannel pieces to be added to the snowman. Have children take turns drawing pieces from the bag.

*Bean bag toss on a large snowman cut out placed on the floor.

*Treasure Hunt: Freeze colored water in muffin tins. Hide the “jewels” in the snow outside on the playground. Have a little chest to collect the “jewels”. Count the “jewels”. Talk about colors and spatial concepts: in, out, under, beside, etc.

*Sensory Table: Snow with mittens, shovel, treasures (Use packing peanuts if snow is not available).

*Puddle Jumping: Musical chairs concept, when the music stops, children stand on a puddle. Variation: say or show a number. The child stands on the puddle with the corresponding number.
