Principal’s Message October 2017

“Lord, it is good for us to be here.” (Matthew 17:4)

Welcome to another great year at Bishop Murray High School! As we enter into the Thanksgiving weekend, I want to thank each of you for choosing Catholic education, for entrusting your son or daughter into our care, and for all they bring to our community. We are truly blessed.

A warm welcome to our new staff members Lisa Higginbotham (head caretaker) and Laura Messier-Duzan (EA). They have fit right in and are doing great work for our students. Welcome and thank you to our student nurses from the University of Saskatchewan who are completing practicum placements at our school this fall, Stuart McGeein and Joanna Korchinski. They are supervised by their clinical instructor Michelle Puteria. And finally, thank you to Avery Ironside for volunteering to lead our students in lunchtime activities in the gym.

We are busy preparing for our harvest liturgy and dinner on October 13th – a celebration of fall and of a successful harvest of our community garden plots. Thank you to all staff and students who took part in preparing, planting, maintaining and harvesting our garden. We are also very much looking forward to meeting you at our parent, teacher, student conferences on October 19th and 20th . Homeroom teachers will be contacting you to invite you to the meetings. Please make a plan to meet and discuss your son or daughter’s progress in their classes.

On behalf of Bishop Murray, God bless and have a great year. We look forward to working with you towards a successful, fulfilling year for your son or daughter.

Principal

Chaplain’s Chit - Chat :

It’s hard to believe we are already in October! The school year is well under way and the leaves are turning colours signaling the end of summer and the start of winter. Our garden plots were fruitful this summer and we will have enough potatoes, carrots and pumpkins for our Harvest Lunch. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate as a Bishop Murray Family and thank God for the harvest as well and the gifts of our staff, students and the many partners in our community.

I extend many blessings to the families this Thanksgiving season. We are grateful for the support you give our students and we are thankful you have entrusted us to your care.

Have a wonderful fall season and remember, God loves you and so do I.

Melissa Henderson, Teacher Chaplain

To focus on promoting leadership skills and encouraging a fun spirited atmosphere.

PD- Professional Development Days

This year we will have Professional Development Days every second Thursday. Students will be dismissed at 12:40PM. Please refer to the attached calendar for a listing of Professional Development Days.

Student Handbook - Over the past few weeks students and staff members reviewed the Bishop Murray Student Handbook. The Student Handbook describes the opportunities that our school provides as well as the rules regarding appropriate behavior.

Parental Contact is an important part of how things are done at Bishop Murray. It is our hope that parents/guardians feel free to contact their child’s homeroom teachers whenever there is information to be shared. We know that the lives of young people are complex and filled with many issues. Open and honest communication between the school and home is critical to ensuring that our students receive the best and proper support from all of us.

Did you know you could earn a high school credit in one month?

Bishop Murray High School offers a Block and One Room School program where credits can be earned over a 20-day period. These classes can offer students an opportunity to improve their grade twelve standing. Students needing only a few credits can work towards their matriculation. To be eligible, students must be under 22 years of age as of enrolment.

Around Our School: Noon Activities - Bishop Murray is very happy to offer in partnership with the College of Nursing a noon lunch program in the gym every Monday-Wednesday starting at 12:15. This is a supervised gym time with University students providing games, activities, a drink and a snack.

HOMEROOM GUIDELINES: Students who take advantage of homeroom time are much more likely to be successful. Homeroom offers students the extra help needed to complete homework assignments and keep up with their work. It begins at 2:30pm and ends at 3:05pm.
