Assessment Instruments – Decision Matrix

Overview

UnitedHealth Group’s Learning & Development and Human Capital teams use a variety of assessment instruments, including multi-rater feedback surveys, employee opinion surveys, and self-assessments. Use the information in this matrix when making decisions about the instrument to use when working with clients, teams, and businesses.

  • Instrument
  • Purpose for using the instrument and the results
  • Administration (includes completing the instrument and debriefing the results)
  • Review (includes information about the instrument’s reliability and validity)
  • Cost

Each instrument can be used by individuals and teams at all levels in the organization. For ease of reference, the instruments are listed in alphabetical order.

Instrument / Purpose/Results / Administration / Review / Cost
DiSC Profile / Purpose
Provides an assessment of individual’s behavioral patterns based on their perceptions of themselves in various environments. Focuses on strengths and areas for development. Suggests ways to adapt a style to work more effectively with others.
Results
Results are plotted in a graph that displays participants’ scores on each of the DiSC dimensions: Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness / Instrument
Self-scored (online and paper) diagnostic completed by the participant
Debrief
2 ways to debrief results with the participant::
  • 4-hour in-class session with a certified facilitator
  • 90-minute web cast session with a certified facilitator
/ Reliability
The current edition of the instrument has reliability scores ranging from .85-.92.
Validity
The validity of the instrument is based on intercorrelations among the most and least scores of the four scales (D, I, S, C) and found to be very strong. However, attempts to measure validity based on comparison to other tests (e.g., Myers-Briggs) are inconclusive. / Instrument
  • $24.95 for online assessment
  • $16.95 for paper assessment
Debrief
Travel-related expenses for classroom dependent upon location.

Insight Developmental 360° / Purpose
Seeks confidential rating from people “above, below, and around” an individual to solicit a full circle of feedback—used to identify development needs that are linked to UnitedHealth Group’s Success Factors. Raters include self, manager, dotted-line manager, peers, and other.
Results
Ratings on the frequency of observed behaviors under each Success Factor are combined with importance ratings to help participants prioritize the areas they should focus on for development. / Instrument
Multi-rater (online) assessment completed by the participant and his/her raters
Debrief
3 ways to debrief results with the participant::
  • 3-hour in-class session with a trained facilitator
  • 90-minute web cast session with a trained facilitator
  • 60-90-minute one-to-one consultation with a trained facilitator
/ Reliability
Insight is an internally-developed multi-rater assessment tool that meets industry standards for dimension and item construction. Specific reliability statistics have not been obtained as yet due to low population samples.
Validity
The validity of this instrument has been demonstrated through correlations with overall performance ratings in MAP, as well as talent grid placements in the Talent Management System. / Instrument
  • $60.00 for individual report
  • $75.00 for team report

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) / Purpose
Provides an in-depth personalized account of personality preferences in such areas as:
  • Communications
  • Problem solving
  • Conflict management
  • Change management
  • Decision-making skills
  • Increasing team effectiveness
Results
Participants are categorized into one of 16 preference types, expressed using a 4-letter code combining their results on the following dimensions: Introversion/Extroversion
Sensing/Intuitive
Thinking/Feeling
Judging/Perceiving (e.g., ISTJ) / Instrument
Self-scored (online) diagnostic completed by the participant
Debrief
The participant results are debriefed in a 4-hour in-class session with a certified facilitator. / Reliability
The reliability (when scores are treated as continuous scores, as in most other psychological instruments) is as good as or better than other personality instruments. And on retest, people come out with three to four type preferences the same 75% to 90% of the time.
Validity
Much research over the years has proven the validity of the MBTI instrument in three categories: (1) the validity of the four separate preference scales; (2) the validity of the four preference pairs as dichotomies; and (3) the validity of whole types or particular combinations of preferences. / Instrument
  • $10.95 for online assessment
  • $11.95 for workbook (optional)

Personalysis / Purpose
Yields information on how an individual can maximize personal, interpersonal and team effectiveness in the workplace.
Results
A combination of numbers and colors is used to provide participants with a visual representation of their preferred behavioral characteristics, and a measure of intensity for each (e.g., 4.0-Yellow=high intensity, adaptability and relationship-driven) / Instrument
Self-scored (paper) questionnaire to be completed by the participant
Debrief
3 ways to debrief results with the participant::
  • 1-1/2-day in-class session with certified facilitator
  • 2-day in-class “executive” session with certified facilitator
  • 4-hour online session plus one-to-one consult with certified facilitator
/ Reliability
The materials do not demonstrate sufficient evidence of reliability, which indicates that much work is needed to develop Personalysis into a psychometric instrument.
Validity
The data concerning validity are scanty and come from small and specific samples.
The questionnaire has not been subjected to rigorous studies attempting to examine its reliability and validity with large and representative samples. / Instrument
  • Included in the cost of the session
Debrief
  • $8,000 for basic workshop
  • $4,000 for executive session
  • $150 for online course
  • Travel-related expenses for classroom dependent upon location.

Instrument / Purpose/Results / Administration / Review / Cost
Strengths Finder / Purpose
Provides a talent assessment for the purpose of building one’s strengths and increasing one’s likelihood of success.
Results
Participants' most prevalent strengths are identified from a list of 34 "themes" (e.g., Achiever, Deliberative). / Instrument
Self-scoring (online) assessment to be completed by the participant
Debrief
2 ways to debrief results with the participant:
  • Self-reflection tools for a participant to use including:
  • Strengths Finder book with strategies for applying strengths
  • Companion website
  • 2-hour overview session or customized one-to-one consult with a trained facilitator
/ Reliability
Gallup has previously found test-retest reliabilities of 0.60-0.80 for the 180-item assessment.
Validity
The validity has been evaluated with respect to the instrument’s intended purpose—to assess an individual in a variety of
settings — employees, executive teams, students, families, and personal development. / Instrument

Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) / Purpose
Assesses an individual’s behavior in conflict situations
Results
Participants’ behavior is assessed along two dimensions: Assertiveness and Cooperativeness. Results on these dimensions are combined to define the participant’s preferred method for dealing with conflict:
  • Accommodating
  • Avoiding
  • Collaborating
  • Competing
  • Compromising
/ Instrument
Self-administered, self-scoring (online or paper) assessment to be completed by the participant
Debrief
A 3-page companion booklet is sent along with the assessment to debrief it / Reliability
The internal consistency coefficients for each dimension are:
  • Accommodating = .43
  • Avoiding = .62
  • Compromising = . 58
  • Collaborating = .65,
  • Competing = .71
Validity
Little validity evidence is provided by the authors. The validity data that are provided can be accounted for by simple social desirability tendencies, limiting its value. / Instrument
  • $13.50 for paper assessment
  • $125 for a package of ten.
Debrief
Included in the cost of the assessment
