THE EMERGING SCHOLARS AND TEACHERS IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTHPROJECT is developed in partnership with Tulane University through the Gulf Region Health Outreach Program.

Project Goal: To improve and promote secondary science education in environmental health by exposing students and their teachers from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties to concepts and practices in the discipline of Environmental Health at no charge to the participants .

Ten teachers will be selected to attend one two-day Teacher Workshop (6 hrs/day; light breakfast, drinks and lunch provided) held on June 5 and 6, 2014. Day one of the Environmental Health (EVH) Workshop will consist of instructor-guided use of the online EVH course resources followed by presentations by a panel of experts with an open discussion related to EVH concepts and issues. The second day of the workshop will include a tour of the landfill with discussion on related environmental health problems. Each teacher participating in the program will receive a $250 unrestricted gift certificate to Office Max.

Students will engage in an 8-week summer Academic Enrichment Program designed to train participants as Emerging Scholars in Environmental Health. Each student will receive a Tabletfor use during the project to complete internet-based assignments and which they will be allowed to keep upon completion of the Program which will take place between June 9 and August 1 with 3 to 4 hour sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. The Monday sessions will be performed online, the Wednesday sessions will be conducted at a location on the University of West Florida campus and the Friday sessions will include field trips to relevant locations where environmental health activities are conducted. During the final week students will work in pairs to give an oral presentation in poster- or tech-based format on a case study that cuts across a spectrum of the information they have been provided. Presentations will be made before experts in Environmental Health who will judge the presentations for awarding of first, second and third-place prizes. All participants will be awarded an “Emerging Scholar in Environmental Health” certificate upon completion of the program.
