Global Thread Supply India (GTSI), a division of Madura Coats Pvt. Ltd wanted to replace its Microsoft FoxPro and COBOL based legacy applications with an integrated enterprise management software system which would meet the needs of its prevailing and future business needs.
GTSI implemented Ramco’s e.Applications at its manufacturing facilities located at Madurai, Ambasamudram and Tuticorin. With the implementation of Ramco e.Applications on Microsoft®Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000, GTSI has achieved a common payroll system with multiple payroll codes and pay sets defined for each location separately. The enterprise resource planning solution has also enabled to account finished goods production (bag wise).
Situation
Madura Coats Pvt. Ltd operates via Coats India and Global Thread Supply India (GTSI) employing around 6000 people. The company is headquartered in Bangalore and has eight manufacturing locations nationwide. Madura Coats also has a branch office in Dubai.
Madura Coats India manufactures a complete range of cotton, synthetic and core spun threads for the domestic and export markets. Coats India’s products are distributed through a wide network of 24 consumer and industrial sales offices across the country, supported by a base of 25000 direct and 200000 indirect customers. Madura Coats annual sales revenue for the financial year ending 2006 was U.S. $ 177.8 million.
Global Thread Supply India (GTSI) has spinning and twisting mills located at three locations in TamilNadu inMadurai, Tuticorin and Ambasamudram. GTSI was using legacy applications based on Microsoft FoxPro and COBOL running on HP UNIX environment.
“The previous legacy system was a stand-alone system which was expensive to maintain. It lacked coordination amongst various business functions and provided us with redundant information across the organization,” recalls Shelton J, Information Management Manager, Madura Coats Pvt. Limited.

Shelton and his team also faced daily challenges with regard to performance on peak load and personnel attrition.“We felt the immediate need for an integrated enterprise management software system which would meet the needs of our prevailing and future business needs,” he reiterates.
Solution
“We chose to implement Ramco e. Applications since it proved to be more efficient and reliable with regard to critical business data. It also integrated with our existing Windows Server 2003 based IT infrastructure,” says Shelton.
With assistance from Ramco Systems Limited, Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, Madura Coats implemented at Water Mill, Ambasamudram (an important dye house of Coats India) and the group head office in Bangalore.Ramco e. Application financial, inventory management systems, purchase order management system, excise, shipping, human resource and payroll, logistics and payroll modules have been implemented with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 as the central database.
Site specific customizations are kept minimal and most of the business needs have been mapped to basic system features.
The first phase of implementation took place between April 2002 and July 2002. The finance and logistics modules were implemented at its manufacturing facilities in Madurai, Tuticorin, and Ambasamudram.
The second implementation took place between September 2004 and February 2005. It included the implementation of the Excise and shipping modules on the entire finished goods stock accounting system.
The third phase included the implementation of human resources and payroll modules in Madurai, Ambasamudram and Tuticorin.
It took place between April 2004 and May 2005.
“Our main objective was to control the site specific customization in all modules throughout the project with few exceptions (raw material and finished goods package wise accounting procedures,” recalls Mr. Shelton.

With the implementation of Ramco e.Applications based on the Microsoft Windows Server System, company personnel now have instant access to accurate raw material and finished goods stock position at any given point of time. It has also improved the periodic stock verification across locations.

It is now possible to maintain ontime delivery schedules due to the availability of information.
Controlled Material Movement
The company personnel are now able to control the raw material, stores and spares material movement across the supply chain.
Standardized Human Resource (HR) information
The industrial relations department now has access to comprehensive information about company workmen and assistants. This data is useful with regard to bonus computations.
