Useful Course Information

The aim of the dinghy instructor course is to enable candidates to be taught the techniques needed to successfully teach other people how to sail. During the course candidate will be introduced to the RYA Teaching method which is used universally in all RYA training centres.

All candidates will be given guidance on teaching in double handed boats and single – handed boats.

Candidates will be taught how to give good presentations, how to handle a safety boat while teaching, child safety, first aid

If the opportunity arises during the course you will also be able to get your certificate coastally endorsed if the dates match the days when the tide is in!

Pre Course

All candidates on an RYA Dinghy Instructor need to have the following

  • Passed the Pre-Entry Dinghy Instructor Assessment
  • Hold a valid and approved RYA First Aid Certificate. If you are unsure whether yours is valid then please contact the coach running your course who will be able to confirm
  • A Powerboat Level 2 certificate – If wishing to run coastal courses this certificate will need to be coastally endorsed.
  • Be a member of the RYA (new for 2013!) - Everyone who wants to be an RYA Dinghy Instructor needs to be a member of the RYA and they need to bring their RYA membership number with them to the course.

Teaching of Course

The course is taught by an RYA Coach Assessor who is an experience RYA Senior Instructor who has worked in many different teaching situations and has been appointed by the RYA to run instructor courses. Coach Assessors are appointed every year and reassessed every five.

The course is run over 5 days with the final day being used as a moderation day. Each day will start at 9am and finish at the latest of 7pm.

Assessment of Course

The assessment of the course is done in two ways. The main way is by continuous assessment by the coaches teaching the course. Candidates are kept fully informed throughout the course and it is common that on the 3rd day each candidate will have a mid-course debrief so that they know what they need to work on throughout the remaining days.

If there is only one coach assessor teaching the course a second coach assessor will attend on the final day of the course to confirm the decision of the initial coach.

At the end of the course you may be given an individual debrief with the course coach in which you can discuss any aspect of the course.

Candidates will be expected during the course to

  • Teach the land drills in going about and gybing in centre main and aft main boats
  • Brief students, run sessions and debrief at the end of each session.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the RYA Teaching Method and general sailing. – This may be done as an informal set of questions.
  • Give a 10 minute presentation on a topic from the national sailing scheme – These are normally sent out before the course so that candidates are aware in advance of what they need to present.
  • Demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching the sport of sailing!

What Happens if I don’t Pass!

Firstly no one fails a dinghy instructor course! There may be elements that you find more difficult and need more practise at it but the coach will discuss this with you during the course and at the end will give you an action plan. The coach will work with you to complete that action plan.

And finally…..

The dinghy instructor course is a fantastic course and we are always looking for new instructors to get more people taking up the sport of sailing so we will work with you throughout the course to ensure you enjoy it and most of all succeed at the end.

Good Luck with your course
