Welcome to Heathlands C of E School

Dear Parent/Carer,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Heathlands C of E Primary School. As a father of two children I realise the important role that a school plays in providing the foundations for a successful and rewarding life. At Heathlands we have created a broad and balanced curriculum to ensure that all pupils have every opportunity to excel and develop a love for learning. At the heart of our curriculum is our school community and the precious partnership that we hold dear with our pupils’ families. Over the next seven years I look forward to seeing your son/daughter flourish and celebrate with you the many successes that they will have on their journey.

Mr Jeremy Hallum

Our Mission Statement

Heathlands School's mission is to develop fully the knowledge, skills, faith and self confidence of all our children in a joyful, enthusiastic and Christian environment.

We believe that every child has a right to a full and interesting education related to their abilities and talents. An education that fulfils a child's curiosity to gain understanding and wonder of the human place in this world. We believe that children flourish at home and at school where their views are respected, their abilities recognised and nurtured and their weaknesses understood and supported.

Aims of Heathlands School

1We aim to provide stimulating environments:

a learning environment in classrooms.

a child's playing/exploring environment in the areas around the classrooms.

a safe play space for games and free time.

2We will encourage all children to take responsibility for themselves, to have sufficient confidence to take the initiative when needed.

3We will, by attitude and teaching, encourage children to share, to care and to enjoy friendships.

4We will engender, by example and teaching, tolerance in our children, and an ability to be self-assessing.

5To maintain the importance of the individual child, we will provide individual assessment, full records and links with parents.

The school is prepared to provide for children's needs, to give them a full education including their spiritual, physical and aesthetic education and so prepare them for a responsible adult life.

Our Curriculum

In this school we aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum through which each child can develop fully, according to his/her aptitudes and abilities. Our curriculum has been designed and revised to ensure that each child has equal entitlement and can develop his/her knowledge, understanding and skills in each subject.

The planned curriculum aims to encourage an enthusiasm for learning nurturing the children’s aural, visual, verbal, mental and physical skills. It also aims to help them understand and appreciate the social, moral, cultural and spiritual aspects of the curriculum, the school, the community and beyond. The school has a high expectation of all pupils, and boys and girls will have equal access to the opportunities presented throughout the curriculum. Children are given the opportunity to reflect on their work with the teacher and plan for improvement and development in the future.

The school aims to encourage self-esteem through personal success, and also to teach children to work together and play together in harmony, showing respect for the views of others.

Heathlands Primary School is committed to ensuring that each and every child is provided with the appropriate support and challenge to enable them to achieve.

Children are taught to appreciate and care for their environment and develop a sense of community within the school, raising the awareness of the children to the contribution they can make to the village and the wider community.

Staff are supported in their aims by Learning Support Assistants. Parents, grand-parents and members of our community are encouraged to assist the school on a voluntary basis in a wide range of school and extra curricular activities.

English

Speaking and Listening

Children are encouraged to discuss their ideas and communicate clearly with others in a variety of speaking and listening activities, and in so doing develop their understanding of the spoken word. They become aware of different audiences (single friends, teachers, small groups, class, school) and develop the ability to express themselves effectively in different situations, both informal and formal. Parents are often invited to public performances of plays, assemblies and family services.

Reading

A love of books and enthusiasm for reading is fostered from an early age. Reading is taught systematically and carefully to all children in order that they may develop the phonics skills they will need to read with fluency and understanding. There is a school library and children are encouraged to borrow books from the class library (Infants) and the school library (Juniors), to take them home and share their reading. A book club is popular and books can be bought regularly. We also have regular Book Fayres.

Writing

A clear legible style of handwriting is taught and children are encouraged to develop their own style based on our scheme which is used throughout the school as a basis for forming and joining letters. Children write on a wide variety of topics and in so doing they become progressively aware of the notion of purpose in writing and that various ways of writing achieve different communicative purposes (poems, notes, letters, pamphlets, plays, stories etc.). They develop the ability to spell, to punctuate, to use spacing and paragraphs and to structure their writing to enable them to communicate in writing clearly and effectively. Drafting, both collaborative and non-collaborative, helps children reflect upon their writing. Word-processing is introduced from an early age.

Mathematics

In accordance with the National Curriculum, mathematics is taught systematically based on the stages of children's mathematical development - from early intuitions to the capacity for handling abstract ideas. Through practical work in topics, maths games, work books and text books, children are taught numeracy. They develop confidence and an ease with number which is then extended to develop their mathematics and problem solving skills. Calculators and computers are introduced at an early stage. From Year 2, children are grouped for maths depending on their ability.

Curriculum 2016

The majority of Foundation Subjects are taught through termly ‘themes’. Our ‘themes’ focus on developing skills in the following subjects:

-Science

-Computing

-History

-Geography

-Art and Design

-Design and Technology

-Physical Education

-Music

-Modern Foreign Languages

-Religious Education

-Personal, Social and Health Education

Children participate in these aspects of the curriculum with real interest, and the work is supported and enriched by visits, visitors, practical work and the making of books and files as the child's response to this planned approach. Through this work, the child learns to think critically, research carefully, and discuss and solve problems.Children are also expected to plan their approach to this work and are encouraged to work in groups, be part of a team, or work individually as is appropriate.

Computing

All children are taught Computing and I.C.T. skills with the school using 32 laptops for at least one laptop session per week per child. Pupils and staff also make very effective use of 32 ipad minisand 16 ipads which enable them to be more flexible and creative in their use of ICT.

Arts and Design

Much of the work of Art and Design arises naturally from theme work. Children learn to look at things carefully and develop an awareness of colour, pattern, shape and design. They use materials of all kinds including paint, ink, clay, fabrics and wood. A high standard of design and finished work can be achieved using these and computer graphics programs.

Music

Children have opportunities to listen to and enjoy good music, to take part in group singing, to play a variety of instruments including percussion, handbells, recorders and other wind instruments. Music, movement and drama are often linked to theme work and also play a part in assembly.

Religious Education and Worship

Religious Education is part of each teacher's programme. A daily act of worship takes place in school.

Parents who wish their children to be withdrawn from Religious Education and assembly should consult the headteacher and alternative arrangements will be made in accordance with Essex policy.

Physical Education

The school halls are used for P.E. which includes gymnastics, games and dance. The halls are equipped with large and small apparatus and the timetable for these activities is monitored. In the interests of safety and hygiene all children change for these activities. Outdoor activities include football, netball, rounders, cricket and athletics. Children also participate in inter-house and inter-school games and festivals and there are after-school clubs. Swimming tuition is provided in specific year-groups and these pupils are transported to a local swimming pool for their lessons.

Sex and Relationships Education

A Sex and Relationships Education programme has been produced with the approval of the governors. Parents are invited to share the content of this study.

Additional Educational Needs

All children are valued, respected and welcomed to the school whatever their additional educational need. We will support their learning and ensure they are fully included in all school activities, making full use of externally provided facilities where appropriate.

Pupils with Special Educational Needs

The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice recognises that there are four broad areas:-

1 Communication and interaction (language and autism spectrum disorder)

2 Cognition and learning (general learning and specific learning difficulties)

3 Physical and sensory

4 Behavioural, emotional and social

Our set procedure for identifying and assessing the special needs of individual children involves pupils, parents, teaching staff and external agencies.

We are able to provide an environment which enables access for all pupils regardless of their need. Our accessibility plan enables optimum participation in the school community for pupils, and prospective pupils with a disability.

Gifted, Talented and More Able Pupils

Our school will have, at any time, a number of able, talented or gifted pupils, We recognise academic and practical performance as well as those who show outstanding artistic, musical and creative talent, physical skills, leadership qualities and the ability to process ideas and information.

Pupils with English as an Additional Language (E.A.L)

Together with the support of external services, we build on the children’s cultural and linguistic experiences to develop their understanding and use of English. We welcome parents and carers into school and embrace opportunities that will enrich our school community.

Pastoral Care and Behaviour

Our school is a community in which behaviour is based on mutual respect and consideration for others. The class teacher, who knows each child well, is responsible for the care of children in his or her class. Particular problems are referred to senior staff, Deputy Headteacher or Headteacher in extreme circumstances.

The values, standards and attitudes of the school community are made clear to the children by example and discussion so that they are absorbed by them and made their own. Rules exist governing behaviour within the school, the playground and outdoor areas.

If a child displays persistent anti-social behaviour, consultation is arranged between the teacher and parents so that an attempt can be made to correct the matter. In exceptional cases, the headteacher may exclude a child from the school for a fixed period, or the headteacher may propose permanent exclusion. Parents have a right to make representation (written in the case of a fixed-term exclusion) to the governing body and the LA at the meeting(s) called to consider the exclusion.

Child Protection

Heathlands Primary School is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of pupils. It is the duty of the governing body to ensure that appropriate procedures are in place for the protection of children from abuse in accordance with the interdisciplinary guidelines on child protection in Essex as published by the Essex Area child protection committee. The Governing Body has designated the Headteacher to undertake the responsibilities outlined in the guidelines.
