Report on Auction 71held on 12 April 2014 (lot numbers shown in brackets)

Our auctions often end with notable items, and on this occasion there were three plates for theRoyal Library Windsor Castle. Crests for Queen Victoria and Edward VII (184, 185) went for £110 each, and Victoria’s arms in a garter (186) made £170. Aubrey Beardsley’s few exlibris are always sought after, thus the John Lumsden Propert (161) fetched £130. Maryland lawyer Daniel Dulany’s uncommon Chippendale (39) is heading back to his native land, having sold for £55, the same price as realised forJessie M King’s design for David MacMyn (162). Two plates by Austin Spare for Pickford Waller (165, 159) were not unduly expensive at £50 and £46, and Ralph Straus (40) by this same artist went to the same buyer at £32, whereas a couple of armorials for the Duke of Newcastle (104) and three pictorials bySimpson(136) achieved £41 and £42 respectively. A group of seven common Scottish plates (167) found a buyer at £41. A joint plate for philosopher Bertrand Russell (27) and his 1st wife Alys was snapped up at £40, and for the same sum went Walter Crane’s pictorials for Gaythorpe and Rozsnyay (163), but buyers paid £34 each for his Adolf Cronbach(158) and £33 for Pape’s Dennis Wheatley (9). Stephen Gooden’s engraving of Apollo for S.L. Courtauld(143) was not unduly expensive at £28, also the sum paid for Henry Ospovat’s art nouveau robed woman for William Argent (156).Surprisingly, Evelyn de Vesci (34) by Sherborn rocketed to £29. If you ask where the bargains were, then look to four dozen crest bookplates at £68, Hilaire Belloc’s pictorial for Maurice Baring at £13 (175) and to the nearly fifty lots that sold for £10 or less, including, for example, the large early armorial of Thomas Foley £10 (124), four heraldic exlibris by Harry Soane £5 (68), the uncommon WPB (Osmond) of Poles £7 (37), and several trophy plates (111, 93, 78). Inevitably some bidders will have been disappointed, but during this and previous sales we have awarded to underbidders such duplicates as are sometimes available. The thirteen members attending the meeting in person together paid £1,103 (estimate £1,000) for 76 lots. Twenty-four absentee bidders spent £2,747 (estimate £1,597) on 101 lots (9 lots unsold) having again been able to view online images of all items in the sale. This innovation continues to be much appreciated, albeit that it requires much extra work by your auctioneer and treasurer who (on a wholly voluntary basis) already carry out the prodigious tasks of preparing the auction list, mailing the many packages and doing the extensive accounting follow-up. Our thanks go to them on behalf of all participants.
