QEP Literature Review and Best Practices Committee

Members present: Osman Bannaga, James Bramlett, Jennifer Wycoff, Genesis Player, Patricia Wilson, Gary Bourgeois, and Geraldine Bell, sub-committee Chair

At this meeting, the group agreed to assign responsibilities to each committee member, in order to facilitate the review process, i.e., all members would not be searching the same topic. After analyzing the topic and how we may address it, we isolated key areas of metacognition and enhancing college reading.
Volunteer assignments were as follows as related to Enhancing Reading Through Metacognition:
- Reading and At Risk – Wycoff
- First Year College Students – Wilson
- General Core-General Education – Bramlett
- Faculty development – Bannaga
- Metacognition – Definition and Strategies – Bramlett
- Learning Theories - Wilson and Wycoff
- Metacognition and College Reading – Bell
Each person will search the literature and find appropriate materials that may be included in the report of the Literature Review Committee.
Committee members were asked to use the Ariel font, size 11.
Bell handed out a copy of “Boolean Search Strategies.”
The group was encouraged to look at QEP’s of other colleges and universities who had a similar topic to ours to ascertain “best practices” particularly for institutions similar to ours.
The next meeting was scheduled for the Media Center on February 17, at 11:00 a.m. Members volunteered to bring snacks to help through the lunch period.

QEP Literature Review and Best Practices Committee

We had located a Webinar on the topic of Metacognition conducted by a renowned authority on the topic at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA, and Mrs. Player arranged for us to view and participate in this Webinar on March 8th.
Ms. Wycoff hadtold the group earlier that she had set up a system wherein we could each input our data into our proposed document using Google docs. She demonstrated how to access and use this system and had given us a link to access the document. She indicated that it would automatically Save as you edit it.
Each member present gave an overview of findings on their assigned topics.
At this meeting, Mrs. Player handed out information on the APA Publication Manual that we should use when compiling our information and inputting it into google docs.
The next meeting was scheduled for February 24. It will be a “lock-in” in the Board Room of the LRC from 12 noon until…everyone has input some information into google docs. The draft report is due on March 7, 2012.

This meeting was held in the Board Room of the LRC.
Members had searched their topics and added them in the appropriate locations in the Google doc.
There were some duplications, but overall, there was a plethora of usable information. Each member read/ reviewed what they had researched and found - and stated why it was felt that this information was important.
Based on information submitted, the committee decided to recommend specific strategies for implementation from the following suggestions that were discussed: skimming, scanning, notetaking, summarizing, previewing, outlining, signal words, selective questioning, and cloze procedure. These suggestions were taken from an article, “Metacognition: Theory and Application for College Readers,” by JoAnne Burley and others. From this list, the following strategies were recommended for the Report: Previews, Questioning, Annotation/Note-taking, and Summarization.
Wycoff said she would prepare an Introduction for the document. A new deadline for the final report is now March 14th.
