Keynote Title: Taking Your Job Seriously and Yourself Lightly: The Positive Power of Humor

Joel Goodman, Ed.D., Founder & Director of The HUMOR Project, Inc. in Saratoga Springs, NY

Keynote Abstract:

School psychologists have a very serious job that can affect and touch the lives of many people. In serving and supporting students, it is vital that you also take care of yourself. It is important for you to be a serious professional… and it is also crucial not to become a solemn professional. This keynote will help you balance taking your job seriously… and yourself lightly. This fast-paced, humorous, and motivational session will include a combination of learning-filled, laughter-fueled, powerful principles to help you discover: the secret to finding humor in your life and work; reasons why you should be very serious about humor; how humor might enhance the quality of both your life and work; and potent personal and professional tips to tap the positive power of humor to improve your health, to build positive working relationships, and to tickle stress before it tackles you.

Session Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the secret to seeing the humor and seeking smiles in otherwise serious reality.

2. Recognize at least three reasons why we should be serious about humor both personally and professionally.

3. Understand the difference between using humor as a weapon to tear people down and humor as a tool to build people up.

4. Appreciate and practice “the art of laughing at yourself” so that you can take your job seriously and yourself lightly at the same time.
