This directory contains an extensive list of funding organisations, grants and scholarships that may be of assistance to persecuted academics, international students and the wider refugee and asylum seeker community looking to undertake educational courses in the UK.

GENERAL

The Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

Provides assistance to students in financial difficulty, aiming to relieve financial hardship that might impact on a student’s participation in higher education. Full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible, as well as part-time students whose courses are at least 50% of full-time (or 25% in the case of disabled students). Prioritizes ‘Home’ students, but certain other categories of student (Refugees, those granted Exceptional Leave to Enter or Remain, migrant workers, etc.) may be eligible.

Campden Charities

Grants to obtain employment with funds for course fees, travel, childcare and equipment and support for students at university. Applicant needs to have lived continuously in Kensington for at least two years, be a British or European citizen or have indefinite leave to remain, be living in rented accommodation and be in receipt of benefits or in low paid work.

Cancer Research UK

Grants for research in any aspect of the study of cancer. Also offer a number of PhD scholarships. Deadlines and criteria differ for different grants/fellowships and bursaries.

Gilchrist Educational Trust

Students who have made proper provision to fund a degree or higher education course but find themselves facing unexpected financial difficulties,normally in the last year of the course. Also those who are required, as part of a degree course, to spend a short period studying abroad.Full-time students at a British University are eligible.

Humanitarian Trust

British citizens and overseas students under 30 years old on a recognised course of study in the UK and who hold a basic grant for the course.Small grants are available to graduates and postgraduates and are awarded for 'academic subjects only', and top up fees.

The Leathersellers’ Company

Grants to British applicants with priority to exceptional students from the Greater London area. Preference is given to Engineering students and other professions connected with the leather trade. Applicants must have an unconditional offer or already be enrolled on a full-time degree course at a UK University at the time of application.

My World of Work (Skills Development Scotland)

The Individual Learning Account (ILA) Scotland provides funding towards the cost of learning something new.Applicants must be ordinarily resident in Scotland, be a UK citizen or EEA national who has utilised their “right of residence” or have “settled within the UK”. Not eligible if person is in Scotland on a temporary or work visa.

National Eisteddfod of Wales

Annual scholarship to the most promising candidate to enable them to further their understanding of creative architecture and design. Open to those born in Wales, have Welsh parents, have lived or worked in Wales for three years, or are able to speak or write the Welsh language.

Professional Classes Aid Council (PCAC)

Provides grants to professionals below theUKpoverty line, who have a strong educational background (degree level or equivalent) or who are part of a profession that requires these academic qualifications.Grants are available for college/university students, General Assistance, Specific Needs and Children’s Education. Depending on the grant, different eligibility criteria apply.

Ruth Hayman Trust

Small grants awarded to support the education and training of adults resident in the UK who speak a language other than English as their first language. Funds not available for post-graduate higher education unless it leads directly to employment.

Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

Academic research grants, fellowships and studentships as well as grants for industrial collaborations, science communicators and others. Included are grants for university-based research and post-graduate training. Available to UK Citizens and all nationalities depending on the scheme and other specified criteria.

Sir Richard Stapley Education Trust

Grants are for students studying for a degree in medicine, dentistry or veterinary studies and funding for postgraduate students from all fields of study. Open to residents in the UK at time of application and during the course of study and aged over 24 on 1st October of proposed year of study.

Sir Walter St John’s Educational Charity

Grants are awarded to cover expenditure necessary for attendance on the course, such as registration fees, travel, books or equipment.Applicants for student grants must be under the age of 25 and must have been permanently resident in Wandsworth or Lambeth for at least six months.

The Wellcome Trust

Variety of funding opportunities, including grants for undergraduate and doctoral students, clinicians, dentists and veterinarians covering a range of areas. Eligibility depends on specific grant.

Sir Halley Stewart Trust

Research topics should fall under one of the Trust’s current priority areas. The Trust does not fund individuals directly as grants are only paid to or through registered UK charities. Open to all.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Aga Khan Foundation, International Scholarship Programme

Priority is given to MA programmes but PhD students also considered. Preference to students under 30 years of age. Applications accepted from the UK, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgystan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, France, Portugal, USA and Canada.Application forms and details are available from AKF offices in each country.

Arab British Chamber Charitable Foundation

Offers partial funding to students who hold citizenship of any Arab League country to study in the UK at postgraduate level only. Applicants must be under 40 years old and have evidence of matching funds. Preference is given to applicants who have chosen to study subjects of potential practical value to the student's home country

Arab Student Aid International

Provides interest-free loans to students wishing to undertake graduate and postgraduate level. Applicants must be Arab citizens who intend to return to their home region upon completing their course, and must already be enrolled on a Masters’ or PhD programme.

Altajir Trust

Scholarships for graduates and in some cases undergraduates from Arab countries to study at British universities. Should normally be of Arab nationality, be resident in an Arab country and not hold British residency. Priority is given to those aged under 35. Applicants must intend to return to their home country or another Arab country after the completion of their studies.

Anglo-Jewish Association

Grants for Jewish students of any nationality in financial need studying a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate course at a UK University or conservatoire.

Asfari Foundation

Postgraduate Masters scholarships at the University of St. Andrews and the University of Edinburgh for Syrian, Palestinian and Lebanese nationals resident in one of those three countries or recently moved elsewhere in the region. Applicants must be committed to returning to their home country after graduating.

Barakat Trust

Grants to applicants worldwide in the fields of Islamic Art History, Architecture, and Archaeology. Support is given for a diverse range of projects, programmes and studies. They include financial assistance scholarships towards an MSt or MPhil in Islamic Art and Archaeology at the University of Oxford, scholarships and grants for post-graduate and post-doctoral study and research scholarships.

British Lebanese Association

Offers postgraduate scholarships in the UK for Lebanese students.

David Montefiore Trust

Funding for students from the developing world undertaking a postgraduate course before returning to their home country. Applications must be made through university or college.

Durham Palestine Educational Trust

Two scholarships to graduates of Palestinian universities to study for a 1-year taught Master’s degree at Durham University. Each scholarship will cover all tuition, living and travel costs for one person. The Trust also offers IELTS fee scholarships.

Canon Collins Scholarship for Masters Study in the UK
Supports scholarships for study at several UK universities, for individuals who are nationals of, or have refugee status in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Applicants must be in possession of a good first degree, or about to graduate in the year of application, and have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship (University of Cambridge)

Funding to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge: PhD (three year research-only degree); MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree); or a one year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.). Citizens from outside the UK may apply. Those classed as “home” students for purpose of fees are not eligible.

The Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund

Offers grants to Sudanese students studying for a postgraduate course in the UK, who intend to return to Sudan at the end of their studies. Grants may be given towards the cost of course fees, and/or food and accommodation, and occasionally for other academic expenses, such as books. Priority is given to students who have already received an offer of a place on a postgraduate course in the UK.

Oxford Brookes University Said Foundation Scholarships

The scholarship covers travel expenses, full fees and living expenses for students from Jordan, Lebanon, Syria or Palestine studying for a one-year full-time taught or research Masters at Oxford Brookes University. Candidates must agree to apply the skills and knowledge they have gained in one of the Said Foundation’s target countries.

Great Britain-China Educational Trust

Chinese student awards for Chinese students (from the PRC including Hong Kong) studying for a PhD in any subject at a UK university. Students must have started their third year before they are eligible to submit their application. Han Suyin Awards specifically for those Chinese (PRC) candidates who hold a recognised medical degree, or a degree in the field of science and technology with some work experience at the relevant level.

The Hammond Trust

Provides financial assistance for living expenses for overseas students of Asian origin studying in the UK who experience unexpected financial difficulties to complete their studies in the UK. Applications must be made through an academic institution.

Hani Qaddumi Foundation

Full and partial Masters Scholarships for Palestinian and Jordanian students residing in Palestine, at UK, US and Canadian universities in a variety of disciplines. Successful applicants must sign a binding contract to return to Palestine upon completion of study.

Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation

The Foundation offers research grants and dissertation fellowships. Highest priority is given to proposals from any of the natural and social sciences and the humanities that promise to increase the understanding of the causes, manifestations, and control of violence and aggression in the modern world. Priority will also be given to areas and methodologies not receiving adequate attention and support from other funding sources. Applicants may be citizens of any country and studying at college or university in any country. The grant may not be used to support research undertaken as part of the requirements for a graduate or doctoral program.

Institute of International Education (IIE) Scholarships for Syrians

Scholarships for Syrian citizens and Palestinian-Syrians holding a Syrian passport.

InternationalScholarships.com is an Internet financial aid resource for students wishing to study in a foreign country. It provides a listing of grants, scholarships, loan programmes and other information.

London School of Economics

The Graduate Support Schemeis open to applicants from all countries in the world, with the exception of those undertaking specific modular or executive programmes.

The Sir Siegmund Warburg scholarshipprovides Palestinian and Israeli students with full-time postgraduate human rights study at the LSE. Applicants must be resident in Israel, Palestine/Occupied Territories or Palestinian camps in Syria, Jordan or Lebanon. Applicants must already be in possession of a formal offer of a place on the MSc Human Rights at LSE

The LSE-Palestine Solidarity Initiativeprovides support to Palestinians looking for scholarships. So far the Initiative have mainly supported applications for Masters Degrees at LSE, but they are now in the process of expanding their network to support applications to other UK universities and degree programmes. Applicants must meet specified English language requirements.

MBI Al Jaber Foundation

Eligibility depends on the criteria of each scholarship scheme which may vary from year to year. Generally, unless otherwise specified, applications are open to all Arab residents of the Middle East and North Africa. Applications must not be made until a place has been secured at a partner institution.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum FellowsProgramme offers graduate scholarships for Arab students at international universities to pursue Master’s Degree programmes in Business Administration (MBA), Public Administration (MPA), Public Policy (MPP) and Finance.

Nora Henry Trust

Grants are made to students from any country, with a preference for students from developing countries, who are studying subjects which will be of use when the student returns to the country. One off grants between £100 and £200 can be given towards books, fees, living expenses, travel and childcare. Application form available from the Trust upon receipt of a stamped addressed envelope.

Ousseimi Foundation

Offers scholarships to Syrian students and others from the Mediterranean. Gives preference to students whose studies are directly related to improving the living conditions and quality of life of people in their country of origin, or whose studies are likely to contribute to a more tolerant world.

The Palestinian American Research Center (PARC)Research Fellowships in Palestinian Studies

Fellowship Competition for Palestinian Scholars for doctoral and post-doctoral research fellowships in Palestinian Studies conducting Field-based Research on Palestine. Women applicants and scholars from the Gaza Strip are especially encouraged to apply

Phoenix Zimbabwe

Funds, placements and vocational training to Zimbabwean exiles, mainly in the UK, to gain practical skills to help build the economy and institutions on their return home. Before grants are released, applicants have to confirm their intention to return to Zimbabwe within three years. Open to refugees and asylum seekers from Zimbabwe as well as unsuccessful asylum seekers.

Plymouth University Postgraduate Gaza Scholarships

Two scholarships to prospective Masters Students from any university in Gaza. Applicants should already hold an offer of a place at Plymouth University.

Postgraduate Solutions Study Bursary

Provides specialised categories of Postgraduate Study Bursaries. Open to students world-wide.

Royal Aeronautical Society

Awards include Centennial Scholarships for postgraduate study, BAG Scholarships that provide a contribution to tuition fees for students studying courses relating to air transport management and aviation and an MSc Aerospace Bursary scheme. Open to applications from overseas as well as UK Members of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Said Foundation

Postgraduate scholarships at Masters, and (exceptionally) PhD levels at UK universities. Other professional development opportunities are occasionally provided. English proficiency criteria apply. Lebanese, Jordanian and Palestinian applicants should submit their application forms to British Council offices in Beirut, Amman, East Jerusalem, Ramallah or Gaza by 31 January. Syrian candidates should submit their form to the Scholarships Officer of the Foundation directly by email by 31 January.

Weidenfeld Leadership Programme and Scholarships Scheme

The programme is for candidates primarily from Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Russia and Central Asia, as well as North Africa and the Middle East to pursue fully funded graduate studies at the University of Oxford. A list of eligible countries is provided on the website. Applicants should intend to return to their country of ordinary residence once their course is completed.

Aid for Jewish Refugees

Refugees, in particular those who are Jewish, living in the UK. Grants may be spent on vocational training courses, fees, books and equipment for any future career.
