MARCH04
Our usual Tuesday meeting was a little different from our normal program. Our President John Bobyk had to leave after the Directors meeting. Our speaker for the day was to be Murray Cleland delivering his MY Life So Far. Murray is still wintering in Florida. Not to worry. Our stalwart members stepped into the breach and the program was revised on the spot.
Roger Lippert took over the President’s duties. Bob Ballantyne delivered the Pause for Thought. John Watkins stepped up, and in us usual inimitable style performed the role of Master of Ceremonies.
The Champlain MusicMakers
William Zufelt was inducted as a new member to the CSSC. Bill was warmly welcomed by all present.
Our entertainment program was a musical interlude by our own MusicMakers. Joe (Toboggan) Ciesielski announced the music and played solos. It was a wonderful program and as always the selections and performance were terrific.
MARCH 11
There was a eulogy for Pete McGarvey, followed by the singing of Amazing Grace
Bill Grant described the requirements for obtaining a Life Membership in the CSSC. The requirements are that you have reached the age of 90 and have been a member for 10 years. Bill requested any member reaching the age of 89 years and 6 Months, and ten years membership, notify him.
Bob Ballantyne was the Master of Ceremonies. Good jokes and fine songs were featured in the program. Joe (Toboggan) Ciesielski played a solo on his violin. It was wonderful. Joe performs with great skill. He could use some help with his jokes.
SPEAKER
Our speaker today was the grandson of Bob Ballantyne, Ben Rabinovich. Ben Graduated from the University of Guelph in Wildlife Biology. In the spring of 2013 he became part of a team of PHD students conducting research on the correlation between the Pacific Wrens and other birds, and the migration of the Salmon in Victoria and Bella Bella Island. Because of previous adventures, Ben had acquired his Small Vessel Operator’s licence allowing him to operate commercial sized boats, the equivalent of a Sea Captain. Ben’s team examined the relationship between the birds, small animals and larger animals. The team was able to document the reliance on birds depositing seeds in their excrement, providing cover for small animals, who became prey for larger creatures. The result of this food chain was that the foliage helped to stabilize the riverbanks, encouraged new growth forest and reduced the silting of the rivers that was stopping the salmon from migrating to their spawning grounds. Ben presented a wonderfully detailed slide presentation with his talk.

Fayne spoke of Pete’s career in broadcasting, and his spearheading of the rescue of the Leacock Home to be used as a museum and cultural centre. Pete was an Alderman 12 times in Orillia.
Ed Nevala was the Master of Ceremonies. The theme of the music was Saint Patrick’s Day. There was a fine medley of Irish songs enjoyed. Good jokes, old jokes and laughs by all. John Godward entertained the club with two questionable songs from his misspent time in bars in Mexico.

Fayne Bullen gave a thank you to the members who had contributed to the PasoPor Paso Charity in Guatemala. Fayne showed slides of his recent visit to the village that is supported by Paso Por Paso. He explained how they had totally rebuilt the school in the village adding space, doors and new roof. The school now has six rooms, up from the original one room, so that many more students are able to attend. The students and teachers presented Fayne with a plaque commemorating his efforts for the students.
Roger Lippert was our Master Of Ceremonies. Roger was supported by a choir of two, Dick Sleep and Gerry Murfitt. The jokes were old and new and the songs were sung with enthusiasm and good cheer.
SPEAKERS
Bob Bowles introduced our guest speakers from the O.D.A.S. Park and Orillia Fall Fair Grounds, Past President Gail Stover and current President Debbie Hamilton who then previewed their plans for the 2014 Fall Fair. Both the past and current president gave special thanks to the club for their support over the years. The subjects ranged from the difficulty of competing with the numerous Fall Fairs in the area, to the recruitment and organization of the 150 to 200 volunteers. They listed the attractions that were going to be available and the reasonable cost to attend for young families. When asked about the large horse pull, they said that they could not compete with the bigger fairs whose prize monies were as much as $5000. One of their main fundraisers is the sale of apple pies. They produce several thousand each year.
