Tutorial 1: Introduction to class

Tutorial 2: Chapter 1 – The Place of Speech in Society and Chapter 2 – Everyday Conversation

pg. 16 – Homework 1-4

Listen to a news broadcast (local, national or international) or read the front page of your local newspaper. On a 3x5 – inch card, write 5-10 subjects you could speak about intelligently. (Read pg. 11 before beginning your list. Be sure to list some of the current events you learned about from the above homework assignment.)

Tutorial 3: Read Chapter 3 – Special Types of Conversation and Chapter 6 – Talking with the Body

Do Pg. 22 Homework 1-2 and Pg. 52 Speech Activities 1-2

Write notes for Impromptu Speaking from pages 23-24 on a 3x5 index card.

Prepare to give an impromptu speech. You will do this in class. I will provide the topic.

Tutorial 4: Chapter 4 – Group Discussion and Chapter 10 – Listening

Type/write your testimony and plan to share it with the class (300-600 words.) You will use an outline of your speech. You will turn in your long form to me and use your outline to give your speech. You will turn in your outline after you deliver your speech.

Pg. 36 Homework #3 – “The importance of church attendance” – Type a paragraph outlining the issue. Provide three supporting points and give a potential resolution for getting people out to attend church.

Prepare for in-class meeting re: starting a school newspaper

Practice Pantomimes – Do some for your family to see if they can guess what you are doing

Practice one pantomime to present to the class for a grade (see pages 62-64 for ideas)

Tutorial 7: Chapter 7 – Interpreting Monologues

Memorize Monologue assigned to you and prepare to present it in class.

Practice monologue each day. Ask family members to watch you and you give you ideas as you practice your pantomime gestures. Use voice inflections as needed.

Tutorial 8: Chapter 8 – Reading with Meaning and Chapter 11 – Interpreting Declamations and Poetry

Listen to Gettysburg Address at: americanrhetoric.com. Write a one page report about the Gettysburg Address explaining the thought, feeling, mood and spirit of the speech.

Practice selection assigned to read in class next week. Practice reading with meaning to clearly interpret the author’s intent.

Tutorial 9: Chapter 9 – Our American Pronunciation

Practice your assigned Declamation/Interpretive selection and prepare for class presentation.

Tutorial 10:

Listen to Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech at: americanrhetoric.com and write a one page report about the thought, feeling, mood and spirit of the speech.

Memorize your assigned poem and prepare to present it in class.

Tutorial 11: Chapter 12 – Storytelling

Practice short story and prepare for the class presentation. Your Short Story must be memorized. Ask family members to watch you as you tell your short story.

Select a topic for giving a devotional and bring it to class. (pg. 203-204)

Tutorial 12: Chapter 13 – Extemporaneous Devotionals

Write your devotional word for word. This will be turned in.

Write an outline for your devotional. This will be used during your devotional delivery and turned in when you are finished.

Practice your devotional and prepare for class presentation from an outline.

Ask family members to watch you as you practice your devotional.

You must have your entire speech typed out (2 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt font), outline typed, props, and must site at least 3 sources in your speech from your research.
