h.Interdistrict Coop Agreements

The Board approved interdistrict cooperative agreements for the 2007-08 school year as listed below:

Interdistrict cooperative agreement to establish receipt of services from or provision of services for Special Education nonresident students with Tacoma, Puyallup, Franklin Pierce, Enumclaw, White River, Orting and Dieringer School Districts.

Continuation of the interdistrict cooperative agreement with Enumclaw, White River, Orting and Sumner School Districts to operate Collins High School, Collins Junior High and Collins Extension Center.

Renewal of the interdistrict cooperative agreement for the operation of Pierce County Careers Connection (PC3), a Tech prep consortium designed to provide students with dual credit opportunities. Pierce County school districts offer courses for credits through Bates Technical College, Clover Park Technical College, Tacoma Community College, and the Pierce College District. The consortium facilitates connections between secondary and post-secondary programs and staff.

Renewal of the interdistrict cooperative agreement for the operation of the South King County Tech Prep Consortium (SCKTP). In an arrangement similar to PC3, SKCTP provides students with dual credit opportunities through Green River Community College, Highline Community College and Renton Technical College. In addition to services listed above, this consortium supports exploration and training opportunities for students as well as professional development for staff.

Renewal of the interdistrict cooperative agreements with Bates Technical College, Clover Park Technical College, Green River Community College, Highline Community College, Pierce College and Tacoma Community College for the Running Start Program and technical high school opportunities.

Safe & Drug-Free Schools (Title IV) Cooperative This is a renewal of the presently existing agreement between Sumner and four school districts (Fife, Orting, Puyallup and Eatonville). Grant monies received in this cooperative will continue to be used to further substance abuse and violence prevention, intervention, crisis management and recovery programming, utilizing collaborative strategies between schools, youth, parents and the communities these districts serve. Grant-funded activities will reflect input from all districts, local schools, staff, students and parents. We anticipate the total allocation (for all five districts) to be approximately $88,000. Performance measurement information for grant-funded activities is available through the STARR project.

Interdistrict Coop Agreements, continued

Renewal of the interlocal agreement with the City of Bonney Lake to contribute $6,000 toward the funding of the Sumner Family Center Coordinator position (January 1 – December 31, 2007).

Renewal of the interlocal agreement with the City of Sumner to contribute $28,960 toward the funding of the Sumner Family Center Coordinator position (January 1 – December 31, 2007).

Interlocal agreement for participation in the Puget Sound Joint Purchasing Cooperative for the bid and purchase of food and nonfood items.

i.Program Applications

The Board authorized the Administration to submit applications for the Title I/Learning Assistance Program, Title VI Program, Gifted Program and the State Transition Bilingual Program for 2007-08 school year.

j.Acceptance of Donations

The Board accepted, with thanks, a donation from the McAlder PTA in the amount of $4,298.01 for the purchase of books for the McAlder library.

The Board accepted, with thanks, a donation from the Maple Lawn PTA in the amount of $5,268.28 for the purchase of two document cameras, two projectors and two laptops at Maple Lawn Elementary.

k.Surplus Property

The Board authorized the District to surplus items on the District Surplus Removal Listings.

l.Out of State Travel

Toby Udager, Assistant Principal, Lakeridge Middle School, to attend the National Conference on Differentiated Instruction in Las Vegas, Nevada, July 15-18, 2007

Greg Pile, Teacher, Sumner High School, to attend the Land-O-Lakes Feed Clinic in St. Louis, Missouri, June 13-15, 2007

Greg Pile and Rusty Finch, Agricultural Science Teachers, Sumner High School, to attend the FAA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, October 21 – 26, 2007. Approximately 14 students will be representing Sumner High School at the convention.

their dedication to the Sumner School District. These employees represent 474 years of service to

students and families.

Vice President Greg Hanon requested that the Board name the newly approved International Baccalaureate program at Sumner High School the Donald A. Eismann International Baccalaureate Program in his honor. President Jeff Demarre moved the motion. Motion carried unanimously.

Board member Mike Pavlik recognized Toni Froehling for his 24 years of service on the Board. Toni will retire from the Board when his current term ends November 2007.

Budget Hearing

Donald Eismann, Superintendent, summarized budget goals for the 2007-08 school year. Sandee Chittenden, Accountant, noted revenue and expenditure comparisons and Margo Stewart, Business Services Executive Director answered questions from the Board.

The 2007-08 Budget will be presented at the July Board meeting for adoption.

Reports

a.Final Bond Election Report

Ann Cook, Communications Director, announced the May Bond Issue passed with 60.66% voter approval. She summarized what was done differently to yield the positive results, including redefining the bond message from the District.

Sumner Education Association (SEA) Vice President Krystal Stephens updated the Board on SEA activities.

Donald thanked the members of the Board for their recognition of his work as the District’s superintendent.
