10. WELCOME
The Chair welcomed the new members and presented them with a badge of honour. The Chair also welcomed Rev Phil Carey who has recently taken over from Rev Jackie Carter who has now retired.
11.MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING – The minutes of the meeting held on Wednesday 18th May 2016 were confirmed as a true record.
12. TO CONSIDER REMEMBRANCE DAY PARADE
The Clerk reported that this year’s parade will take place on Sunday 13th November at Eglwys Dewi Sant and Hill Street Cenotaph. Everyone would be asked to congregate at Ysgol Y Grango car park by 9.30a.m. Schools would be asked to provide pupils to read the list of names at the cenotaph and also to lay a wreath that the Council will provide. Ioan Llwyd Parry volunteered to read the Welsh readings in the church. All information will be sent through to the schools prior to the event.
13. TO DISCUSS THIS YEAR’S YOUTH COUNCIL TRIP
The Clerk reported that this year’s trip will take place on Thursday 20th September, due to the 21st being a teacher training day and will be visiting King Arthur’s Labyrinth and the Corris Mine site, which will take up the full day. All schools will be receiving confirmation and a request for the names in full and parent consent forms. Members of Youth Council from last year and this year will be invited to attend.
14. TO RECEIVE A REPORT FROM:
14.1Ysgol Y Hafod CP School reported:
- We’ve had a great start to the new school term
- On 29th September the choir will be performing in the Harvest Festival in St Mary’s Church, Johnstown
- On 30th September the school will be supporting the Macmillan charity morning. The children have made cakes and biscuits to raise money for the charity
- The school’s Harvest Service will take place at St Mary’s church on 6th October, there will be songs and poems and craft shared with the whole school that the children have made.
- Yr 6 children are beginning their annual ‘Bikeability cycle training’ scheme. This will make sure that the children are given the safety skills to ride carefully around the area.
- The school has already booked its place for the panto this year which is very exciting.
- In October, the school has organised a World War 2 history day. Members from the Wrexham History will be coming to the school. The children will have the opportunity to discover what it was like to be an evacuee. They will be able to handle real and replica WW2 objects.
- The school’s wide choice of school clubs have started this term. We have Heart Start, Games Club, Netball, Running club Football, Craft club, Recorders, Drama group and choir.
14.2 Maes Y Mynydd reported:
- The topic for this term in Years 5 & 6 is Minibeastes. We recently went on an Educational trip to Chester Zoo to do some research.
- The topic for this term in years 3 & 4 is 'Our Amazing Bodies'.
- We have just elected our new head boy, head girl, deputies and prefects. Our head boy and girl are Kitty Bayley and Rhys Owens.
- All classes in the school have school council reps, eco reps and welsh monitor.
- We are holding a Coffee Morning this Friday in aid of McMillan Cancer Research. We will also be having prize bingo with lots of prizes donated by local businesses.
- We held a Summer Fayre last term and made over £600!
- Year6 children have already started their transition to Grango.
- We have lots of after school clubs running - Football, rugby, netball and we have Emma from StreetVibeZ coming in on a Tuesday to run a class.
- The parent's group, 'Butterflies' have been studying a 'Come and Cook' course which will give them a level 2 qualification in health and nutrition.
- We are looking forward to our upcoming residential, Yr 6 will be going to Cardiff, year 4 to Nant B H and year 2's to Glanllyn.
14.3Ysgol I D Hooson reported:
- New School Year/New Term – Pupils and staff returned to school following the summer break, 45 new nursery children began their 1st day in school.
- Committees and groups – School council, Eco school, Welsh Charter group have been elected at the beginning of the new term. Angharad Hughes and Tryfan Jones were elected as Head girl and Head boy. The various groups and committees will play an important role in various decision making and other activities during the year.
- Owain Glyndŵr day – The school celebrated Owain Glyndŵr day to celebrate and remember Owain Glyndŵr as the last Welshman to be Prince of Wales. We all came to school wearing a red item of clothing.
- Clubs – Various Sports and Dance clubs have been held after school. They include football, rugby, netball, gymnastics and dance activities.
- Film stars – A group of year 2 pupils have been busy working with the Ceidiog Television Company. The children are busy preparing a children’s programme in Welsh to be shown on S4C called Ti Pi Ni.
- Penblwydd Hapus i’r Stiwt – The school performed in the concert held at the Stiwt Theatre on Saturday 24th September 2016. This was a very special concert to celebrate the theatres 90th birthday. Other performances on the night included Rhos Male Voice choir, Côr Merched Rhos, Côr ger y Ffin and Rhos Orpheus Male voice choir. The world famous pianist from Pentre Bychan – Llyr Williams also performed on the night. It was a privilege for the school to be part of the celebrations.
- Themes and Topics – The children have begun studying a variety of topics within the different year groups. Foundation phase children have been busy learning about colours, Yr 3&4 have been learning about healthy eating, while Yr 5&6 are enjoying work with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
- Fire Safety – Emma Mccullock from the North Wales Fire service visited the school to talk about fire safety. It made us think about the dangers and risks associated with fire.
- Minecraft – Year 3& taking part in Minecraft workshops, making use of their IT skills.
14.4Ysgol Y Grango reported:
- Excellent start to the new term
- New Year 7 pupils have settled in well
- Open evening took place on 20th September, excellent turnout and a very positive evening
- A disco has been organised by the year 11 Prefects for Yr 7 tonight
- The Maths Department are holding a 1 month Information Evening regarding the new examinations. There will be 3 presentations. One aimed at Yr 7&8 parents, one aimed at Yr 9&10 parents and one specifically aimed at Yr 11.
- Fund Raising – We are supporting and participating in the McMillan Coffee morning on Friday 30th September to raise money for the cancer charity.
14.5 Ysgol Morgan Llwyd reported:
- An open evening was held last evening for Yr 6
- A coffee morning will be held on Friday 30th September to raise money for the cancer charity, McMillan
- Voting has taken place for School Council members
- Yr 7 are visiting Glan Llyn in October.
The Chair thanked the children for their interesting reports.
15 REPORTS FROM ATTENDEES
Councillor Mrs H J Jones reported that the Council Chamber has been painted using a grant from a local supermarket and pupils from Ysgol Morgan Llwyd as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. The Clerk reported that a very old map had been found and will be framed to put in the Council Chamber along with all the Councillor and Youth Council photographs.
The Chair thanked everyone for such an interesting meeting and their attendance and declared the meeting closed.
