- Identify and provide an example of the author’s use of imagery to describe the setting. To what sense(s) does this example appeal? Explain.
- Read and analyze the following three quotes. What insight do these descriptions provide regarding the attitudes and character of Gatsby’s guest? What might Fitzgerald be trying to emphasize in these passages?
“The bar is in full swing, and floating rounds of cocktails permeate the garden outside, until the air is alive with chatter and laughter, and casual innuendo and introductions forgotten on the spot, and enthusiastic meetings between women who never knew each other’s names” (40).
“Laughter is easier minute by minute, spilled with prodigality, tipped out at a cheerful word” (40).
“The groups change more swiftly, swell with new arrivals, dissolve and form in the same breath; already there are wanderers, confident girls who weave here and there among the stouter and more stable, become for a sharp, joyous moment the center of a group, and then, excited with triumph, glide on through the sea-change of faces and voice and color under the constantly changing light” (41).
- Explain the relationship between Gatsby and his guest. Who are the people that attend his parties and how do they get invited? How do they differ from Nick Carraway’s attendance?
- What simile does the narrator use to describe the behavior in which Gatsby’s guest conduct themselves? How does this simile provide further insight into the relationship between Gatsby and his guest? What other insight does it give the reader in regards to the type of people that attend?
- How does the narrator initially feel when first arriving at the party? Explain. What happens that helps him relax?
- What reaction does the narrator get from one of the guest at the party when he asks if they know the whereabouts of Gatsby? Explain why the guest may have reacted this way.
