Presents

THE ART OF SIGN MIME STORYTELLING

With Howie Seago

June 21-22, 2007

Thursday and Friday, 8:45 am – 5:00 pm

Sign Mime in ASL is a highly visual, stylized form of storytelling which involves the use of only classifiers and pantomime. Conventional, arbitrary signs are not used but rather iconic or descriptive signs. Sign Mime borrows cinematic techniques to present the story through different perspectives. Participants will develop individual stories through hands-on guided processes. Class size will be limited to enhance individual development.

Space is limited to 18 participants. Pre-registration required.

This workshop will be presented in ASL. Interpreters will not be provided.

Howie Seago’s professional credits include acting, directing, producing, and teaching for over 30 years. He was featured in Beyond Silence (Jensueits Der Stille), nominated for an Oscar Award as Best Foreign Film in 1998. He also appeared on television in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Hunter and The Equalizer. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, La Jolla Playhouse, Off Broadway, in tours of Europe, Japan and Russia. He performed leading roles in several Peter Sellars productions such as Biblical Pieces (opera), Ajax and The Persians, and with the National Theatre of the Deaf. His acting work has been recognized through several awards including the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actor and the Dramalogue Award. He is featured in Actors’ Lives – On and Off the American Stage by Holly Hill; and Chronicles of Courage: Very Special Artists by Jean Kennedy Smith and George Plimpton. His article, “In An Alien World of Sound” was published by Theaterschrift, an international theatre book series. As an Associate Producer/Writer/Assistant Director, he was instrumental in the creation of Rainbow’s End, an Emmy award winning PBS television series for deaf children. He co-founded the Deaf Youth Drama Program at Seattle Children’s Theatre in 1993 and is a national board member of Very Special Arts. He is currently Director of The Shared Video Outreach Project, an award winning literacy program delivered to Deaf and hard of hearing children via long distance videoconferencing under the auspices of the Washington School for the Deaf.
