Kindergarten Pretend and Learn Lesson

Unit: Food

Pretend and Learn Theme: Grocery Store

Whole Group Introduction to Center
Center Introduction:
Send home the parent request form for donations of food boxes, cans, etc. Have students brainstorm a list of things you find in a grocery store, jobs you have in a grocery store, why people go to a grocery store. OR teacher goes to local grocery store and photographs parts of the store (dairy, vegetables, meat section, etc.) Present photos in a power point and have students discuss and make connections.
Creative Learning: as students tell what people do in a grocery store, have the student act it out/role play/ frozen statues.
Center Participation and Organization:
Students can
1) be a cashier: scan food, count money, make change, make receipt
2) be a bagger: put items into bags, hand bag to customer
3) be a stocker: sort store items and replace them on shelves
4) Be a customer: make a grocery list, collect items, purchase items at register, then returns bag to stocker.
5) Return grocery items to appropriate locations, in preparation for next group.
Teacher models how to restock items during introduction of center.
As you discuss each job role, model appropriate vocabulary with explicit role play. For example, the cashier says “Welcome to our store. Can I help you today? Thank you for shopping at HEB.” Sts. then switch jobs.
