Position:Crisis Intervention Worker

Reporting to:Shortbreak Manager

Responsible for:Up to 2 x Casual support staff

JOB PURPOSE:

To provide a comprehensive consultation, referrals and crisis resolution service. This is a 24/7 (365 days) service to respond to emergency referrals for those who represent or seek assistance for young persons with severe emotionaldisturbances. Services provided include 24/7 Crisis Response and/or Respite.

Main Responsibilities and Key result areas

To work with children and young people who are at crisis point through providing focused work as planned anddirected by the placing authority according to the individual’s needs. To safely remove young people and provide intensive support to youngpeople who need an emergency placement.

Adhere to and have the physical ability to immediately perform the use of pre-approved RestrictiveMeasures when necessary whenever a young person becomes a danger to themselves or others. The use ofrestrictive measures is pre-authorised via the client’s behavioural support plan and always falls within theparameters of the HCS Behavioural Management Guidelines (Team Teach).

Understand what young persons in Crisis related symptomatic behaviours might be expected and how to manage them.

To be involved in the organisation and delivery of activities and emergency breaks which are in the best interests and meet theneeds of young people and the placing local authority.

Review and implement each young person’s individual behavioural support/care plan each time they are assigned that young person.

Provide constant and direct supervision of young people at all times. Be vigilant and physically able tointervene during transportation, transition times, and activities so as to the greatestextent practicable, protect against injury to the young person or to others.

Work with young people in both a group setting and on a one to one basis. Supervise, attend and physically assist with scheduled outings with the young people, which includetransporting to and from events and participating in recreational activities.

To encourage and facilitate boundaries, structure and routine in children’s livesthrough programs of direct work with young people.

To work flexibly, being able to immediately respond to crisis, out of office hours and to work away from homewhen required.

To assist the CIS manager in carrying out placement administration, e.g. submitting accounts, orderingsupplies, maintaining records.

To ensure a risk assessment is completed for all young people being worked with.

To ensure a risk assessment is undertaken for all activities and trips.

To ensure that Health & Safety standards are met.

To be an effective role model for other members of staff.

To work flexible hours including: weekends, bank holidays; be available to sleep in if required, according to theneeds of the service.

To work in any HCS Residential Children’s Home or any other establishment as directed by the CIS Manager.

Observe confidentiality at all times in relation to the young people, recognising the vulnerability and the need toshare information as appropriate.

Qualifications and Experience:

Qualified to NVQ Level 3 (or working towards)

Knowledge of child care legislation & regulations

Assessment & care planning process

Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Fire Regulations

Experience of working with young people and families
