A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE PICKENS HIGH SCHOOL WINTER GUARD, ITS INSTRUCTOR, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE SOUTH CAROLINA BAND DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION REGIONAL A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the members of the Pickens High School Winter Guard took top honors at the state competition in Charleston on March 23, 2013; and

Whereas, winter guard is an indoor competitive circuit where color guard units compete by themselves to recorded music in gyms with the season usually beginning in December or January and ending in March or April; and

Whereas, Pickens High Winter Guard competes through two governing associations, the Carolina Indoor Performance Association (CIPA) and the South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA); and

Whereas, this season the Pickens Winter Guard participated in the CIPA Dorman qualifier on February 2, the CIPA T. L. Hanna on February 16, and the SCBDA Winter Guard Championship that conferred Pickens High School’s first state championship trophy on any band program in the school’s history; and

Whereas, the Pickens High School Winter Guard began rehearsals in November with Color Guard Instructor Ryan Durham and these performers used movement training and equipment skills on flags to create awardwinning effects and worked diligently to prepare for the competitive season; and

Whereas, Color Guard Instructor Ryan Durham, a graduate of Easley High School and Clemson University, performed with the Clemson Tiger’s winter guard and capitalized on his own ability and training to hone the Pickens Winter Guard team members into a championship team and teach these performers lessons that will prove invaluable throughout life; and

Whereas, a combination of eighth through twelfth graders, the Pickens High School Winter Guard members include Lexie Ashe, Megan Brady, Emilee Clark, Rayna Cobun, Hailey Fancella, Allison Gardner, Bryanna Garrick, Brandon Hendrix, Shayla Lance, Katie Littleton, Darra Long, Sarah Long, Kayla Nix, Katelyn O’Connor, Chelsea Raxter, and Allison Simms; and

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate appreciates the recognition that the members of the Pickens High School Winter Guard have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Pickens High School Winter Guard, its instructor, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the South Carolina Band Directors Association Regional A State Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Marion Lawson and Color Guard Instructor Ryan Durham.
