Job Title:Talent Match Coach (Maternity Cover but may lead to a permanent position)

Hours:28 hours per week over 4 days

Salary: £17,000 - £19,000 pro rata

Location: Wigan Youth Zone, Parsons Walk, Wigan

Project Details: To complete the Talent Match project for girls aged 18 – 24 years old. The Talent Match project ends in December 2018. Maternity cover is required from April 2018 – December 2018 but may lead to a permanent job for the right candidate.

Job Purpose:

To support young people aged 18-24 years old who are NEET, coaching them for the remainder of the contract and transitioning them into work, education or training. Continued support is required even when the young person has transitioned into work through continued mentoring with a primary focus on female young people.

Context of the post:

Wigan Youth Zone opened in Spring 2013 and is a £6m youth centre with state-of-the-art facilities, providing a wide range of sporting, artistic, cultural and general recreational activities and targeted services. Wigan Youth Zone provides a safe meeting place for young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, where they can participate in a wide range of positive activities, all for just 50p. The two-storey building hasa four-court sports hall with climbing wall, a fully-fitted fitness suite, a boxing gym, dance and performing arts studios, as well as music, media and visual arts facilities. There is also a cafe, together with recreational and social areas. Externally there are four all-weather kick-pitches. Wigan Youth Zone is open 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, providing local young people with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.

Job Description

  • Develop meaningful relationships with young people to support them for the remainder of the project, whilst maintaining professional boundaries, in order to achieve positive outcomes;
  • Provide personalised support and high quality advice to enable young people to overcome personal and practical barriers, based on individual needs; Implement effective and timely reviews in line with the programmes monitoring requirements;
  • Deliver in line with the programmes ‘test-and-learn’ approach by developing and testing new and varied approaches to find out the impact in progressing different young people toward employment;
  • Use the Greater Manchester Talent Match Opportunities Hub on a regular basis to enable young people to understand the complex array of initiatives and projects available and match them to appropriate opportunities along their personal pathway to employment;
  • Contribute to the Greater Manchester Talent Match Opportunities Hub to identify gaps in provision required to meet beneficiaries’ needs and list available services or support where identified;
  • Engage with the Greater Manchester Talent Match Development Officer – Volunteering and Training to understand and promote volunteering opportunities;
  • Support the on-going evaluation of the programme and encourage the meaningful involvement of young people in the development, delivery and evaluation of the Greater Manchester Talent Match programme;
  • Promote the principals of Greater Manchester Talent Match within their own organisation and networks;
  • Share the programme’s positive approach by challenging negative perceptions of young people and celebrating their achievements through strong and positive communications;
  • Work with employers, supporting them to understand the benefits and challenges of recruiting young, unemployed people and to make their recruitment practices more ‘young person friendly’;

General Support of our ‘Get a Job’ Employability Skills Course:

8-week educational programme

  • Teaching or teaching assistant support of our qualifications:

-PEARL (Personal Employability, Achievement and Reflection for Learning) Accreditation up to level 3

-B-Tec Level 1 in Work Skills.

  • Supporting a weekend outdoor education residential.
  • Supporting students to complete a 2 week work experience placement.
  • Supporting students to transition into full or part-time work, apprenticeships, training or education.

General (Youth Zone Wide)

  • To be alert to issues of safeguarding child protection, ensuring the welfare and safety of Youth Zone members is promoted and safeguarded, and to report any child protection concerns to the designated Child Protection Officers using the safeguarding policies, procedures and practice (training to be provided);
  • To assist with any promotional activities and visits that take place at the Youth Zone;
  • To actively promote the Youth Zone and positively contribute towards increasing Youth Zone membership;
  • To adhere to Wigan Youth Zone policies at all times, with particular reference to Health and Safety, Child Protection and Equal Opportunities.

Other duties

  • To carry out any other duty with the Youth Zone provision and facility operations, and within the competencies of the post holder, as directed by your line manager or a senior manager.

Experience
Face to face activity delivery, working with children and young people (aged 16 – 24 years old) both in groups and individually / 
Experience of supporting young people who are disaffected, underachieving and / or have social / emotional barriers to participation / 
Experience of working in a team / 
Experience of working with young people from the target groups and supporting them into employment, education and training. / 

Additional information

Normal working hours will be 28hours a week over 4 days (exclusive of breaks).

In accordance with our Child Protection and Safeguarding procedures, this position requires an enhanced DBS check.

Remuneration package

Salary:£17,000 - £19,000 pro rata

Holidays:25 days plus 8 bank holidays (pro rata)

Pension:Eligible, after six months’ service, to join the Wigan Youth Zone Personal Pension Scheme; 3% of salary is contributed by Wigan Youth Zone, if the employee contributes 3% or more.
