Lab 5 – Experiment Design
Geology 3265
Hillslopes
In this lecture we saw a claim that angular, coarser grains have a steeper angle of repose than rounded finer grains. In this Lab we will design and carry out experiments to determine the Angle of Repose of subrounded detrital grains, in a range of sizes. Angle of Repose, according to Bloom, is related to the density, surface area and shapes of the particles, and the coefficient of friction of the material.
- Write down a general description of how you will proceed.
- Give a list of the equipment and supplies you need.
- Write down a list of steps you will take.
- Try your experiment with different samples of aquarium gravels. What problems did you run into?
- Is there any difference in the angle of repose for the different samples? Any overlap in your observations? Are the means of measurements far apart?
