Dear Parents and Volunteers:

THANK YOU FOR REGISTERING YOUR CHILD IN THE FRENCH LANGUAGE HELP PROGRAM

The following information is provided in the hopes of making your child’s experience as beneficial as possible.

Program Coordinator Information:

My name is Carol Proulx Lindberg, I am a community volunteer, and parent of 2 adult daughters who attended French Immersion School in Edmonton. I grew up in Québec with a francophone father and Anglophone mother who believed in bilingualism. I attended French Elementary School and English High School and University. I moved to Alberta in 1980 and to Stony Plain last Fall. Now that I am retired I wanted to get involved with the French Immersion Community and I am thrilled that the Stony Plain Public library and Laura McGillis are actively finding ways to help their French Immersion families in the community.

My contact information is:

Goals of the Program

ü  The goal of the group is to support parents by providing help for doing “homework” in a fun environment.

ü  The learning model we are using is based on the Peer tutoring model developed by Canadian Parents for French

ü  Older French Immersion students and community are recruited to peer tutors. We are aiming to match one volunteer to each child in the program

ü  This is the basic format for each group meeting:

ü

We started out the program in September with 3 volunteers and the number of interested volunteers grew to the point where we were able to provide one-to-one peer tutoring for the children. This has been a win-win for both the children and the volunteers. We will do our best to continue to adapt and improve the program to meet the needs of the children.

þ  Please send me an email and or call me if your child will not be attending a specific class. This way I can adjust the pairing of volunteers to children. Our goal is to be as consistent as possible to match the same volunteer and child each week.

þ  Please bring a snack and or drink for your child.

þ  If possible, talk to your child’s teacher about their involvement in the program. The practice is most beneficial if the child is able to bring a book or books at the level they are currently working on in class as well as the weekly French spelling words so that our volunteers can practice these with your child.

þ  Please provide your Email information so that I can send you updates or if I come across information that may be useful to you as a parent of a French Immersion Child.
