**Immigration Suitcase-Tuesday December 2nd

When immigrants came to America, they were not able to bring all of their personal belongings. They had to select items that were particularly important to them. The students will create a suitcase to carry their personal and important belongings.

Please have your child bring in his/her suitcase by Tuesday December 2nd.

Must include:

1.  Something to remind them of their family back in their homeland

2.  Something to remind them of their homeland country

3.  Something to entertain them on the voyage

4.  Something that represents their occupation/skill

5.  Something to eat/sealed snack (non-perishable)

6.  One item of their choice (appropriate to the time period)

7.  Letter of recommendation (**see below)

**Immigrant Letter of Recommendation—Tues. December 2nd

Immigrants entering the United States needed to prove that they were able and willing to work; however, they couldn’t have a job waiting for them. If they were unable to support themselves, they could become a “public charge”, and then the government could send them back to their old country.

Please assist your “immigrant” in acquiring a letter of recommendation. This letter may be written by a parent, relative, or neighbor. The letter will state the immigrant is capable and qualified to work upon entrance through Ellis Island. Your child should have already selected an occupation at school during our Social Studies lesson.

**Encouraged Project Components:

(Immigrant Dress & Food item)—Thurs. December 4th

Our “Immigration Project Presentation Day” will be Thursday, December 4th. Students are encouraged to dress as immigrants on this day, although it is not required. Students may also bring a food item that is popular in the country they are from. This is also optional but strongly encouraged. If your child decides to bring in a food dish, please make sure it doesn’t need to be heated or kept cold. Please also prepare enough so that everyone is able to have a small taste.
