The Wonderful Wizard ofOz

by L. Frank Baum

“There’s a cyclone coming, Em,” Uncle Henry called to his wife.

“I’ll go look after the stock.” Then he ran toward the sheds where

the cows and horses were kept.

Aunt Em dropped her work and came to the door. One glance told her of the danger close at hand.

“Quick, Dorothy!” she screamed. “Run for the cellar!”

Toto jumped out of Dorothy’s arms and hid under the bed, and the girl started to get him. Aunt Em, badly frightened, threw open the trap door in the floor and climbed down the ladder into the small, dark hole. Dorothy the floor and climbed down the ladder into the small, dark hole. It was very dark, and the wind howled horribly around her, but Dorothy found she was riding quite easily. She felt as if she were being rocked gently, like a baby in a cradle.Toto did not like it. He ran about the room, now here, now there, barking loudly; but Dorothy sat quite still on the floor and waited to see what would happen.

Television History

Television has become a huge part of our everyday life. It provides entertainment, news, advertisements and so much more for people of all

ages.

The television was not invented by just one person; many people throughout history contributedideas and inventions to make TV what it is today.

Over time people experimented with the idea of mixing electricity and radio to see what would happen.

This was the starting point and the beginning of the invention of television. During the late 1800s, Paul Gottlieb Nipkow, a student in Germany created the very first device to transmit pictures with light. He did this by sending pictures through wires which rotated on a metal disk. This was called the “electric scope.” Inspired by Nipkow, anAmericaninventor called Charles Jenkins invented the first mechanicaltelevision system in 1923. He called this device “Radio vision,” which he preferred over the name television. It was known to have poor reception and a 40 to 48 line picture that tended to be cloudy.

Jenkins publicly performed his first television broadcast inAnacostia, Virginia all the way to Washingtononly a couple years after. In 1926,ABritish inventor

named John Logie Baird transmitted the first moving pictures through the same mechanical disks that Nipkow had experimented with. This was followed by

the very firstTV studio which was located at theCrystal Palace in London. He used transparentrods and reflected light rather than back-lightingsilhouettes.

PhiloTaylor Farnsworth created the firstelectronic television system which got rid of the metal rotating disks. By 1934 all the televisions sets had been converted to electronic device, which is what we are still using to this day. Black and white TV was the standard, with color television showing up much later.RCAwas the founder of color television and had its first broadcast on December 17, 1953.

These progressions in modern television set upthe foundation for the plasma and HDTV screens you see today.

The TrojanHorse

Long ago, the mighty cities of Troy and Athens went to war. No one could remember exactly how or why the war had started, but after ten years of fighting, neither side wanted to back down. The vast armies of Athens had sprawled out their campsites at the foot of Troy’s walls, laying siege to the poor inhabitants. Everyone was affected by this decade-long war that showed no sign of ever ending. Then one day, the men and women of Troy woke up to a pleasant surprise. They looked out their windows, expecting to see the tents and soldiers of their enemy, but instead saw nothing. The lands surrounding Troy were, for the first time in years, completely empty. First, the Trojanswere confused, but their confusion quickly turned to celebration. The warwas over! The Athenians must have given up. As King Priam of Troy celebrated with the rest of the royal family, Trojanguards rolled in a massive wooden horse that they had found sitting outside the city gates. It must be a peace offering, the Trojans decided happily. “The Athenians have left behind a gift to apologize for the troublethey have caused us.”

The Trojans, however, were very, very wrong. The Athenians had not given up. Instead, they had built the great wooden horse to trick the peopleof Troy. As Troy celebrated their presumed victory, Athenian soldiers hidinside the wooden horse, waiting to attack.

At dawn, while the city of Troy slept, the wooden horse began to creak. Some of the wooden boards slipped aside and Athenian soldiers pouredout. By noon, the city of Troy had fallen. The ten-year war was over.

Jake Returns Home

I have returned to my hometown of Wilson Creek after an absence of 10 years.

So many things have changed around here. When I left Wilson Creek, there was a small pond on the right as you left town. They have filled in this pond and they have built a large shopping mall there. A new post office has also been built just across from my old school.

There is a baseball stadium on the outskirts of Wilson Creek which has been changed completely. They have now added a new stand where probably a few thousand people could sit. It looks really great.

The biggest changes have taken place in the downtown area. They have pedestrianized the center and you can't drive there anymore. A European-style fountain has been built and some benches have also been added along with a grassy area and a new street cafe.

My street looks just the same as it always has but a public library has been built in the next street along. There used to be a great park there but they have cut down all the trees which is a pity. The library now has a large green area in front of it but it's not the same as when the park was there.

Another improvement is the number of new restaurants that have opened in Wilson Creek. A Chinese and an Italian restaurant have opened in the town center and a Mexican restaurant has opened near my home. Which is where I am going tonight!
