Purpose and Intent of Scholarship

For a chance to win scholarship money, Student Activities Office, Memorial Union presents “NDSU’s Solicitation for Sustainability Proposal”. The goal of this campaign is to seek active participation from students (and only students) at NDSU in the shift toward a more sustainable campus. Thisis an opportunity to make your voice heard within the campus community on the things that are encountered on campus daily. Areas that wheneffectively reorganizedcontribute to increasing resourceful stewardship of the environment. It will be an avenue to present different viewpoints in the current debates concerning the environment. Another reason for this campaign is to showcase the talents that are present in the university as a whole. Participants may work individually or as a group.

Monetary awards will be given to the top three outstanding proposals which result from individual or group effortat the Bison Service Challenge Banquet. Banquet begins at 7:30pm May 6, 2010 in the Ballroom, Memorial Union.Winners may chose to keep the money; pay it forward to a nonprofit agency of their choice, or put it toward a service trip of their choice. First price will be awarded $250, second price $150, and third price $100.

Proposal Instructions

Proposals should be typed using a word processor such as Microsoft Word. It must be at least 250 words in length and no more than 3 pages;double spaced. It must include the following:

  • Cover Page - A cover sheet with the name(s) of participant(s) and title of project. The title should be relevant and grab the attention. Points will be awarded for creativity of the title. The cover page is not included in the 3 page limit of the actual proposal.

Actual proposal must include:

  • Introduction – A brief overview of what the project is and what the intended outcome is.
  • Body – In this section, state the idea in detail. Be sure to explain how the project works; how it will be carried out; who will be involved (e.g. students, departments, campus organizations, etc); how resources will be raised and allocated to complete the project; the cost savings todepartment(s) or the entire university (and the city of Fargo if applicable); the number of people it impacts (that is, those who will benefit from the sustainability initiative); any additional comments that make the proposal standout.
  • Conclusion/Summary–Summarize the proposal and reiterate why the university or the community should adopt this project.

Keep in mind the key word here is “Sustainability”. While there are several ways to define this word, this project considers “Sustainability” in the context of efficiently maintaininga course of action in order to achieve desired results. The proposal should therefore score high on longevity and efficiency. External sources may be referred to and must be cited accordingly.

Evaluation Criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Ingenuity &Originality- Think outside the box, the more unique the proposal, the better. The scope of impact will also determine the points awarded to each proposal.
  • The Energy/Cost Savings – Explain the opportunities it presents – Include how to maintain your idea and any improvement that can be added over time. Say the project idea can be improved upon with a technology that is currently unavailable, but will be in the near future, such information shouldbe provided.
  • Overall Presentation & Creativity – This includes format, attention to details and credibility of sources used. External sources may or may not be used. If used, more weight will be placed on academic and independent/non-partisan sources; hence, Wikipedia may not be the best source of information.

Do not be afraid to think outside the box, as long as it is well thought out and can be backed with persuasive argument. The selection committee for this project has been carefully selected from various facets of the environmental sustainability spectrum to represent a wide range of perspective and knowledge.
