Goals
Two primary goals of this class are to (1) prepare a portfolio of 24 excellent works for the AP text by April, and (2) develop personal & original style as individual artists. Clearly, the focus of this class is the AP exam, but, the structure allows for a great deal of independence & personalization. Above all, the hope is that all students do work that they enjoy and are proud of.
Portfolio Requirement
*all works must be original & demonstrate ones best ability of quality
*all works must demonstrate understanding of basic design concepts
*all art must be completed & matted by the end of April—specific dates TBA
*all works will be photographed and submitted digitally on CD—one for teacher
Expectations/Atmosphere
This is a college level class intended for serious minded art students. A supportive environment is critical to every artist. We need to maintain an atmosphere in which each person and his/her works is treated with respect. Be mindful of other people’s feelings. You do not need to adore everyone, but you do need to treat each other with courtesy. Constructive criticism is required, expected and encouraged.
AP studio art resembles any other sort of team…although we will all work independently, good group morale is critical. This class is a STUDIO class: you have chosen the privilege of working with talented artists at this school, so work. Everyone has days where they feel uninspired or tired, but you need to use this time to your advantage. If you are having a difficult day, find SOMETHING artistic to do. The act of doing often brings about the most engaging work, and once you begin working, you will probably become engaged in your art. Nothing is more demoralizing than looking up from your hard work to see other students who are not taking the class seriously. If you are unclear as to my expectations, ask.
Grading
Work is frequently so individual and experimental that grading is difficult. Still, there are standards of quality in student work often shown through elements of design, specific color, light arrangements and/or painting techniques which must be expected at this level. Not only will the evidence of thought, care, and effort be expected for works, but assignment deadlines will be crucial to individual grades. Students will be expected to meet all deadlines which may necessitate upwards of 10 hours outside of the classroom. Many students may find that they are simply not quite ready for such a demanding studio art class…students who cannot make deadlines should realize that their grades will reflect the college level expectations, and they may wish to try the following year.
