MEMORANDUM FOR HOME AND COMMUNITY SERVICES FIELD STAFF

From: Rita Summers, Assistant Section Administrator

Adult Protective and Community Services

Subject: St. Louis University Mental Status Exam

The Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE) is a tool that the Division of Senior and Disability Services (DSDS) has advocated to be used when measuring decisional capacity. Due to recent MMSE copyright enforcement, the division will no longer be able to utilize this tool. Both the MMSE and Clock Test (CT) will be replaced with the St. Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) exam effective immediately.

As with the MMSE, the SLUMS indicates the possibility of cognitive impairment and should lead the Worker to consider professional evaluation. For further information on assessing decisional capacity, see policy 1703.60.

For hotlines closed after the MMSE and CT fields are removed from the NRP2 screens, the Worker shall enter any completed MMSE and CT evaluation scores on the comments screen (F8) of the NRP2. In addition, the Worker shall enter the MMSE and CT scores in the Mental Abilities section of the Protective Services Recording (DA-7a).

MMSE and CT scores entered on previous reports will still be visible on the NRPI victim screen.
