2004 EDUCATION LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (ELI) - MOROCCO

The University of the Middle East Project Education Leadership Institute (ELI) is a three-week academic program designed for teachers and administrators from throughout the Middle East and North Africa. This program will take place in Morocco from July 12 to July 31, 2004. The ELI will be followed by the Teacher Education Reunion (August 2-5, 2004, for alumni from all previous Teacher Education Institutes, 1999-2004).

ELI will address the educational challenges facing K-12 education in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). During the institute, participants will be exposed to innovative ways in utilizing the potential of organized, collective action and negotiation techniques, and means of inducing changes in K-12 education.

Preliminary selections will be based principally on the personal statement and essay. Interviews of the selected semi-finalists will be conducted by phone or in person in February. The names of accepted applicants for this institute will be posted on the University of the Middle East Website at on March 10, 2004. Comprehensive Scholarships are available to most ELI participants.

Application must be postmarked before February 6, 2004. It is strongly recommended that you submit your application early, and if mailed, via Aramex, DHL or Express Mail. Early applications will be given priority. Applications should be sent by e-mail to or mailed to the above UME address. No late applications will be accepted. Please submit the following pieces:

  1. Complete application form (5 pages total)
  2. Two letters of recommendation; including one from your current supervisor. The recommender is asked to comment on the applicant’s following qualities:
  • Teaching abilities
  • Interaction with colleagues
  • Level of involvement (i.e., administrative meetings, teacher meetings, students activities)

All letters of recommendation should be signed by the recommender and placed in a sealed envelope. The recommender should also sign or stamp the seal and write the applicant’s name on the outside of the envelope in English. Preferably, letters of recommendation should be in English, but letters in French and Arabic are acceptable. Letters of recommendation should be sent with the completed application but may also be sent separately at a later date.

  1. Personal statement of 300 words or less: Each ELI participant brings valuable intellectual and cultural experiences that greatly enhance our program. What do you think you will contribute to 1) the academic richness of the program, and 2) the learning of the other participants about your own culture? Finally, what do you hope to bring back with you when you return to your home country?
  2. In an essay of 1000 words or less, respond to the following:

“As a professional educator and citizen of the world, how do you envision education developing in the years ahead in your community, country, and/or region, and why? If you can, describe experiences that you may have had in initiating needed changes in your school/education system. Finally, in what ways do you expect the UME alumni network and the ELI course in Morocco to aid you in your future efforts to begin implementing these changes?”

Essays may not be written, edited or translated by anyone but yourself. All essays must be written in English.

Essays over the allotted number of words will not be considered.
