Job title:Media Officer

Responsible to:External Engagement Manager

The role

The Media Officer works with the External Engagement Manager to plan and deliver on reactive and proactive media work to realise the College’sprioritiesfor communications and engagement with externalaudiences. In particular this includes:

  • 24/7/365 media response service – with relief from other team members and/or an outsourced service
  • effective promotion of Collegemessages, policies and views sometimes on a campaign basis
  • buildingrelationshipswith the media both nationally and regionally

This post has been re-designed following the completion of a communications review in spring 2016, the recommendations from which were agreed by the College’s governing Council in July. The postholder will work across the College: specific and strong links will be needed with those involved in policy work and major externally facing projects. The post is self-supporting.

The External Engagement team

The post is within in the External Engagement team (part of the Executive Office which reports to the Chief Executive). The team is responsible for engagement and communications with external stakeholders (i.e. other then College Fellows and members) including resources for patients and the public. The CollegePresident and other elected Officers are key figures indetermining the College’spolicy stance and messaging to external audiences.

The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR)

The RCR is the UK professional, membership body responsible for the medical specialties of clinical radiology and clinical oncology. Its activities include the setting of standards for practice and training, setting and running examinations, and the continuing professional development of its practising specialists. There is a total membership ofover 10,000 worldwide. Further information about the College’s activities can be found at

The RCR is governed by an elected Council of practising clinical oncologists and clinical radiologists and has two Faculties, one for clinical oncology and one for clinical radiology. Policyis determined by the two Faculty Boards. The RCR’s elected and appointed Officers are practising specialists and serve for defined terms. The College employs over 55 staff headed by the Chief Executive who has a small Executive Office team and who is supported by Executive Directors responsible for Education, Professional Practice and Finance and Resources.

Summary terms and conditions

  • Salary up to £36,255depending on skills, experience and demonstrable track record
  • 35 hours per working week plus out of hours media response work for which overtime payment will not be made
  • Initial annual leave entitlement of 25 days plus public/bank holidays
  • Open plan office space.

After completion of an initial period (usually three months):
