Unit 1
Equations and Inequalities
Learning Goal :The student is expected to create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems explaining each step and constructing viable argument to justify their solution method. When given a real world scenario they must also state any constraints and interpret the solution of the equations or inequalities in its context.

Essential Questions:How do you use quantitative reasoning to
solve real-world problems?
How can you use algebraic models to
solve real-world problems?
How do you use an equation to model and
solve a real-world problem?
How do you rewrite formulas and literal equations?
How do you write and solve an inequality that represents a real-world situation?
How can you solve a compound inequality and graph the solution set?
Standards in this unit
Explain each step in solving a simple equation as following from the equality of numbers asserted at the previous step while recalling the properties of equality starting from the assumption that the original equation has a solution. Construct a viable argument to justify a solution method.Create equations and inequalities with one variable and use them to solve problems and model real-world situations Describe the relationships between the quantities in the problem, express these relationships using mathematical operations to create an
appropriate equation or inequality
Represent constraints by equations or inequalities, and interpret solutions as viable or non-viable options in a modeling context.
Rearrange formulas to highlight a quantity of interest, using the same reasoning as in solving equations. For example, rearrange Ohm’s law V = IR to highlight resistance R.
