MEDICAL STUDENTS ENGAGING IN A MEDICAL ELECTIVE OR CLINICAL TRAINEESHIP AT A SOUTH AFRICAN ACADEMIC HOSPITAL NOT EXCEEDING A PERIOD OF THREE (3) MONTHS

Foreign medical students who wish to engage in clinical traineeships (Famulatur) or medical electives (Tertial des praktischen Jahres) in the Republic of South Africa may only do so at academic hospitals in the country; therefore, the foreigner is registered as a student with the relevant South African university, which also confirms the foreign medical student’s provisional acceptance (purpose and duration of the visit) in the form of a signed and dated letter on the university letterhead. The South African university would also assist the foreign medical student with his or her regulatory registration with the ‘The Health Professions Council of South Africa’.
