Middle school students successfully conducted a social marketing campaign to change our behavior, and convince us to use re-fillable bottles and coffee mugs! We reduced the amount of disposable paper cups from 924 cups per week to 536 cups per week.
The first Middle School Wednesday activity focused on teamwork and environmentalism. Students worked in teams of four to construct and deconstruct cup towers as quickly as possible, as seen below.

Later, students used their imaginations to build sculptures using recycled water cups to inspire the BLS community to use fewer paper cups. The art sculptures have been placed on top of water fountains around school as a way to encourage people not to waste cups.

Our Eco-conscious middle school students continued their green initiative to reduce the amount of paper water cups used at Baltimore Lab School the following week. Lower school students made signs to remind their fellow Dragons to avoid waste, and Middle school students encouraged everyone to sign a pledge to bring a refillable water bottle to school. Teachers signed an online pledge through Moveon.org.
Students recorded radio style public service announcements which were “aired” for daily morning and afternoon reminders.

It Worked!
Our middle school students successfully conducted a social marketing campaign to change our behavior, and convince us to use re-fillable bottles and coffee mugs! We reduced the amount of disposable paper cups from 924 cups per week to 536 cups per week. If we continue this trend, we'll use less and less. Great job, middle school!
Please continue to use those re-fillable bottles and coffee mugs! Ask Mrs. Child if you're in need of one!
Another incredible recycled cup art project!
