Current Events Guidelines
Current events are a key part in our study of the world. They impact people on a local, national, and/or global scale. We need to know how some event occurred but, most importantly, why it happened and the impact it may have. These events can have effects on our country and other countries as well. We will be working with current events on a regular basis in the region we are studying. The following explain how you will do a current event in World Geography.
How do I choose an article?
ý The article must be a political, economic, or social issues. Celebrity gossip, sports etc. while interesting and a big news story should not be used.
ý The article should be less than a month old from the time it is assigned.
ý The article can be from newspapers, magazines or the internet (CNN, FOX, etc)
ý If you are unsure whether your article is good, you should ASK! You are not allowed to not do a current event because you didn’t know if the article was appropriate or not.
How should my current event look when I turn it in?
ý It should be typed.
ý Make sure your name, date, and block in the upper right hand corner.
ý The top of your paper MUST have the:
o Article’s title
o Author (if listed)
o Date it was published
o Where you got it from
ý You MUST attach the original article.
So…what am I supposed to write about?
ý Paragraph #1
o Your first paragraph should be a summary. A summary is a short writing that states the major facts. A summary is NOT a complete rewrite of the article or a list of random facts about the article. As the old saying goes: “Just the facts!” There should not be opinion, comment, or any sort of reaction. The summary should tell me what I need to know about the article without me having to read the whole thing. (8-10 sentences)
ý Paragraph #2
o Your second paragraph should be a reaction. Is the event a good thing or a bad one? If so, why? How will this effect the people who are involved in this event (remember that the news event may influences many people or countries)? Is this related to a bigger situation? For example, if you have an article about Iran giving guns to terrorists in Iraq, you can connect it to our presence in Iraq and the war on terror. I am interested to see how deep your connections and thoughtful opinions. (8-10 sentences)
ý No matter what, make sure your summary and opinions are clear. Watch your spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
After I turn it in, I’m done right?
ý You would like to think that! Hopefully soon after we turn them in, we will have some time to discuss them in class. Be ready to summarize and discuss.
