Annual Report 2000-2001
The school year ending May 2001 saw the chapter's membership increase to over 30 and the continuation of the Archives Week momentum created by the chapter in 1999. The Executive Board guiding the chapter consisted of:
- President: Mike Strom
- Vice President: Maribeth Kobza Betton
- Treasurer: Rebecca Brooks
- Secretary: Joanna Cook
- Events Chair: Richard Workman
- Web Page Chair: Justin Saffell (Fall) and Carol Mead (Spring)
The Executive Board began to plan for Archives Week in May of 2000 and continued to work on the event throughout the summer. The board selected international archives as the theme of Archives Week 2000. Events during the week included colloquia presented by Juan Manuel Herrera, Director of the National Archives System of Mexico, and J. Mitchell Johnson and Gabor Beszterczey, producers of the PBS series Red Files and founders of the multimedia archive project Russian Archives Online. The chapter also conducted an Archives Clinic at the Austin History Center during Archives Week in an effort to introduce the general public to archives. The chapter had t-shirts, posters, and pencils made to commemorate the week.
While Archives Week represented the peak of the chapter's activity during the school year, events occurred consistently throughout the year. We toured two archives institutions and hosted many professionals active in the field. The University of Texas at Austin has an energetic archives program and I am pleased to report that nearly everyone considering a career in archives is a member of SAA and the student chapter. We have good people in the program and many participate in chapter events.
