In BRUSSELS, from 25 June to 3 September, the “Tourism and Gastronomy" exhibition will offer you a chance to discover the many assets and treasures of Wallonia. Every two weeks, one Province will be given pride of place. However, we know there’s nothing like getting out and about if you’re looking for an in-depth experience, so why not try one of our “Gastronomic Treasure Trails"?

All the treasure trails are free and available from 25 June to 16 September 2012, (except for the Charleroi Pays de Geminiacum Treasure Trail). Simply turn up on one of the dates mentioned below and enjoy a delicious free welcome treat to send you on your way!

from Nivelles to Arlon...

Does the summer sunshine make you want to get out and about?

Starting at the Espaces Wallonie, roads, streets, paths and tracks will lead you over hills and down valleys to discover the treasures of Wallonia. Heritage, gastronomy, landscapes and outstanding historic sites - there is something for everyone.

To ensure all participants, especially the gourmets, get off to the best of starts with a full stomach, free breakfasts or afternoon snacks will be available on certain days.

And, before starting your trails, why not find out more about the wealth of services offered by the Espaces Wallonie: from information about housing to debt conselling, from Equal Opportunities to the regional, federal and community mediation services, plus a range of regional publications and exhibitions. In short, a modern administration, close to your needs and ready to answer all your questions.

But, enough said, now it’s time to get on your bicycle, pull on your walking boots, or climb inro your car and take to the road...

The guide to each treasure trail includes a set of questions. Write your answers in the spaces provided, drop it off at the Espace Wallonie reception or letterbox when you have finished and you could win a prize!

Prizes

Every month:

A gourmet basket worth €60 will be awarded to the first correctly completed answer form pulled out of the hat at the end of July, end of August and end of Septembe in each participating Espace Wallonie.

(Except for the Pays de Geminiacum treasure trail, where the prize draws will be held on 15 and 22 August only for a gourmet basket worth €50).

On the days when free breakfasts or afternoon snacks are offered (see table)

A voucher worth €150 for accommodation in Wallonia.

Will you be the “Gourmet treasure trail (wo)man” of the summer?

There will be another prize draw for a special prize for participants who submit completed questionnaires for at least one treasure trail per province between 25 June and 16 September. To enter this draw, please ask for your entries to be validated at each Espace Wallonie.

The prize is a voucher worth €500 for accommodation in Wallonia and the draw will be held at the end of September.

Summer Gastronomy Treasure Trails

The Eastern Cantons: nature, lakes and regional specialties

Approx. 120km, 5 to 7 hours by car

Starting point: Espace Wallonie, 2 Rue Gospert, Eupen

Leave the Espace Wallonie and turn left along the Rue Gospert. Turn right at the end of the street and continue along the main road. At the first roundabout take the second exit, at the second roundabout take the first exit, and at the third roundabout take the third exit, following the signs to Monschau. Bear right at the fork in the road, then at the roundabout, take the first exit. After 6.5km, turn tight into the Haus Ternell car park.

Haus Ternell is part of the CRIE (Regional Centres for Environmental Education) network. It is situated close to the Hautes-Fagnes moor and offers training courses on nature conservancy.

1)In the medicinal plant garden, what is the Latin name of the medicinal plant which can help treat rheumatism that is growing near the small pond?

Return to your car and continue towards Monschau, passing the Hautes-Fagnes moor on your right.Cross the border into Germany and enter the town of Mützenich.After about 1km, turn right towards Kalterherberg (NB the road sign is on the left!). After approx.5km, you will arrive in Kalterherberg.

Kalterherberg is famous for its magnificent fields of daffodils.

2)What colour is the roof of Kalterherbergchurch?

Continue along the main road. After 2km, turn right, signposted to Malmedy, cross back into Belgiumand continue along this road for approx. 4km. On your right, you will see the Ortis factory.

3) Since what year has Ortis been manufacturing natural remedies and phytotherapy products?

Continue along the road, and after 100m you will arrive at a roundabout with a cart on it. Take the second exit towards Bûtgenbach. Follow the road (passing themilitary camp on your left)to Elsenborn. At the crossroads by the church, turn right towards Bûtgenbach. Continue for about 2.6km. After a few tight bends, turn left towards Berg. After 600m, you will arrive at the BütgenbachLake dam. You can park on the right-hand side of the road.

4)How high is the dam?

After this short break, turn around and take the main road back to Bûtgenbachand turn left. At the roundabout, turn right and then sharp left. At the next fork in the road, bear right and continue straight ahead to the village of Schoppen. Then turn right and then right again. At the next crossroads (after approx. 300m), turn left. After 400m, turn right towards Amel.

5)How many wind turbines can be seen on the way to Amel?

In Amel, turn right at the crossroads, then turn left, then right, then left again.You will arrive in Diedenberg.Follow the main road to the crossroads.Turn right towards Montenau.In Montenau, take the first turning on the right towards Ligneville.The Montenauham-smokery (Schinkenräuscherei) is on your right.

Ardennes Ham has been made in this area for centuries and is now world-famous. At the smokery, you will be able to see how this delicious ham is made. It is left to mature for at least five months before being sold.

Continue towards Ligneville and go over the bridge over the River Amblève. Turn right and go past the St Raphael monastery towards Ligneville. Watch out for potholes! When you reach the crossroads, turn towards St Vith, then take the first road on the right. When you reach the main road, turn left and then sharp right towards Recht-sur-Pont. Then turn right towards Bellevaux, and, after 700m, turn right into the Mathonet-Gabriel Fish Farm car park and park your car.

Situated in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, between Stavelot and Malmedy, the Mathonet-Gabriel Fish Farm is famous for its different types of trout.

Return to your car and continue along the road, passing a quarry and through the village ofLasnenville. Follow the main road to Bellevaux, and after 400m, turn left towards the Brasserie de Bellevaux. Park your car and follow the signs to the brewery.

The Bellevaux Brewery is proud of the fact that it makes beer using pure Ardennes spring water from the village. This water’s mild character brings out the full potential of the other ingredients. The beer is neither filtered nor pasteurised. The brewery’s beers are 'live' beers and are naturally cloudy. Taste one and see for yourself...

Return to you car and continue in the same direction along the road. Take the first turning on the right, then the first turning on the left (steep slope). After the church, turn left and follow the road to Malmedy. Go under the small bridge and then take the first turning on the right and continue to the end of the street. Then turn right and continue to the roundabout, where you take the second exit, then take the first right and park near the playground. Continue to the tourist information centre in the town centre on foot.

Return to your car and continue in the same direction along the road to the end, then turn right, then turn left at the end of the road. At the roundabout, take the third exit towards Robertville. Pass through the villages of Chôdes, Gdoumontand Walk and park your car in the Robertville Dam car park on your left, just before the traffic lights. Get out of your car and walk across the dam.

If you wish, you can walk 800m to Reinhardstein castle, but the path is not suitable for reduced-mobility participants. At the little crossroads, turn right. This walk takes about 45 minutes.

This castle dates back to the fourteenth century and it is the only Eifel-style castlein Belgium, and is very different from the other castles in Belgium.

Return to your car and drive across the dam. When you reach Ovifat, turn left towards Reinhardstein, then follow the road towards Elsenborn. At the roundabout, turn right towards Elesenborn.Go through Sourbrodtand turn left towards Eupen.

The Hautes- Fagnes

The Hautes-Fagnes moor lies on your right. Enjoy a 5-minute walk to the Prior's Cross.

Go back to your car and continue towards Eupen. After 2km, turn left towards La Gileppe. About 7km after Jalhay, turnright towards Eupen, follow this road for 2.5 km and then turn right towards the La Gileppe dam. Park in the car park.

Return to you car and do a u-turn, retracing your route towards Eupen. When you get to Eupen,. turn right. At the first roundabout, take the third exit (towards Raeren), then at the second roundabout take the second exit, then at the third roundabout take the second exit. Turn left at the second set of traffic lights, and you will find yourself back in the Rue Gospert. At the end of this street is the Espace Wallonie.
