Unit 1 Performance Task # 1: Party Designing
GOALS:
1. To decorate and design the floor plan for the ChiArts Fall Dance
2. Determine the space and cost of decorations. The space must be accessible and within budget.
ROLE:
You are on the planning committee for the Fall Dance.
AUDIENCE:
The target audience is the rest of the planning committee.
SITUATION:
The ChiArts Fall Dance is on November 5, 2011 and will take place in the school gymnasium. You must come up with a theme for the dance. All furniture for the dance will be supplied in-house. You must design the floor plan for the dance with this furniture. A list of the in-house furniture is attached. A budget of $1225 can be used for designing the floor plan and decorating the in-house furniture. A list of decoration items to choose from is attached. You are required to choose from the list and it is very important that you stay within the budget!
Since there is no way to know the exact number of people that will attend the event, you must consider different scenarios to predict whether or not you will need a certain amount of furniture and decorations. Here are 3 scenarios that you must consider:
1) Low attendance: 85 ChiArts students and 45 non-ChiArts students in smallest room with the dimensions 33’ by 22’.
2) Average attendance: 125 ChiArts students and 60 non-ChiArts students in medium-sized room with the dimensions 99’ by 44’.
3) High attendance: 190 ChiArts students and 75 non-ChiArts students in largest room with the dimensions 207’ by 88’.
PRODUCT PERFORMANCE:
Part 1 (Choose a Theme): Decide on a theme for the dance. Choose colors and general décor. Type one paragraph describing your theme, explain why you chose and describe what students can expect of your theme.
Part 2(Set Up and Describe Equations): Observe and analyze the dimensions of the rooms for the three scenarios. Describe the pattern in these dimensions. Write equations representing perimeter and area for the three rooms. Check your expression by substituting the length and width dimensions for the room. (Remember, this is still a math project, so you must SHOW ALL YOUR WORK!) Once your equations check out, translate your equations into verbal sentences.
Part 3(Connections to Language): After you translated your equations, write one paragraph about how and why did math become universal? Did you need to become fluent to use the language of math?
Step 4(Sketch Layout):
Use the three provided blueprints for each space. Each space should be divided so there is an entrance for checking-in, an area for photographs, dance floor, and space for snack and dining tables. Within each blueprint, label the lengths and widths for the entire space and each divided section.
Part 5 (Select In-House Furniture): See the first attached list that states the options for in-house furniture. Determine how much in-house furniture can fit across the length and width for each type of room. Include a list of your choices and calculations. Within each blueprint, there should be sketches of the in-house furniture for the small, medium, and large rooms.
Part 6 (Determine Area of Decorated Space): Determine the area of space needed for the in-house furniture for each scenario (low, medium, and high attendance). Show all your calculations.
Part 7 (Determine Expenses): See the second attached list that states the options for decorations. Determine which decorations will cover the area of space for each scenario and calculate how much it will cost. Include a list of your choices and calculations. Make sure that your total expenses are within the given budget
Part 8 (Write a report): You must type a half-page report that explains your layout and decisions that needed to be made to remove or add furniture or decorations. This is the report that you will present to the committee. Remember, it is important that your prices are within budget.
STANDARDS and CRITERIA for SUCCESS:
Your final project should include:
· 1 typed paragraph describing the theme for the dance
· A list and a description of the equations for the area and perimeter for the three rooms
o Translation of the equations
o Supportive work to check the equations
· Half-page report on connections to language
· 3 blueprints (provided) with layouts for the different scenarios
o Measurements for length, width, and perimeter for the entire space
o Division marks of the four areas
o Measurements for length, width, and perimeter for each area
o Sketch of in-house furniture
o Measurements for length and width of in-house furniture
· A list of selected in-house furniture and calculations of the perimeter for in-house furniture
· Calculations for the area of decorated space
· An expense list of decorations
· Half-page report of layout and decision-making process
