PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
June has been such a busy month. I am so proud of our teachers, students and our parent group. The teachers have devoted their time to provide many engaging activities both in the classrooms and with extra-curricular activities to keep our students motivated right until the end of the year. Many of our students have capitalized on these opportunities and have had a lot of fun, acting, running, jumping, dancing, writing, singing and learning.
Our grades three and five student choir sang beautifully at the Senior’s Centre. We received a very welcome reception. Our Track and Field day was a resounding success. The weather was beautiful. The students were strong ambassadors for James Bolton. We had many, many strong finishes in the competition. Our primary cross country team ran regularly building up endurance. I was so impressed at how well they ran and what wonderful sports they were at their in-house meet. The primary and junior eco club were very busy this month. They took on a tetra recycling project and found a service that would take and reuse formally non-recyclable items (such as yogurt containers). This was an incredible time commitment. Congratulations to them. The play day was a big success. We revamped the way it was delivered this year. The children were wonderful. They were positive and very well behaved. Our grade fives worked incredibly hard both on the stage and behind the scenes to deliver another phenomenal talent show.
The June Barbeque was a huge success. The weather was fantastic. It was a lovely time just to enjoy each other’s company. I am continually in awe and very thankful as to what a lovely community we have. A very special thank you goes out to the Rotary Club for donating their time to provide a delicious barbeque. Thank you to our parents who donated items for the baskets. Thank you to all those volunteers who wrapped the baskets so professionally and beautifully. Lastly, a very special thank you to a special mom, Caroline Gangi who organized the whole basket raffle.
June is a time of closure. We need to say goodbye to Mme Handa who has accepted a Grade One French Immersion job at Rowntree Public school, closer to home. She was a wonderful asset to us here at James Bolton and know that she will be a welcome addition at her new school.
We would also like to wish Mrs. Sallo-Raso all the best in her position as a behavioural teaching assistant at Great Lakes Public School
We have appreciated both Ms. Moriatis and Ms. Sanye’s incredible efforts with their maternity leave positions. We wish them best of luck in the elusive job search. I know that where ever they end up those schools will be richer because of them.
We would like to welcome back Mlle Greenslade. We were very sad when we lost her to reorganization last year but thrilled when we were able to rehire her into the Grade One French Immersion job.
We would also like to wish Mme Carbonell all the best in the much anticipated birth of her first child. Mlle Swan has done a fabulous job with us in the Grade Four classroom. She will be working with Mme Honeyman in the pod.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mlle Wellard. She will be taking over Ms. Tolman’s extended maternity leave in grade four FI. Mlle has come to use with stellar recommendations and we look forward to having her on our staff. I know that our wonderful community will make her feel welcome.
Summer is a time to recharge, re-energize and have a lot of fun. Make a goal to make learning natural and fun. Snuggle up together and share wonderful books. Follow maps on road trips. Play math fact games. Work it into your fun and no one will realize that learning is being consolidated and that your child is getting ready for a new school year.
I wish you all the best for a safe, relaxing, fun-filled holiday. I hope to see everyone back on September healthy and happy.

Milk Bags for Haiti
Thank you very much to all the JB families who collected milk bags and sent them to the school during the last few months. These bags were cut into strips and a group of grade four students volunteered to chain the “loops” into balls of “crochet material” during an e-break, every week. Thank you also to these students.
Milk bags will be collected again when school starts in September. Please save your clean, dry bags during July and August. The best and easiest way to do this is to put flattened bags (or folded once) into a box. With the right sized box (i.e., Xerox paper boxes), approximately one hundred bags can be packaged in one box.
Thank you again for your support with this project. Mrs. W. McNeil
Class Lists
Each child will receive the name of next year's teacher on their report card. Hopefully, this will remain the same, however, parents and students should be aware that we may be making teacher and class changes by re-organization day on Tuesday, September 27th, 2011. It is highly likely that we will re-organize.
Class Placement
Careful deliberation went into each and every class placement. Each child was placed, where in our best professional opinion, he or she will thrive. This year we have been staffed very tightly. Our classes are very full. At this point there is very little room for movement. Please understand also that there is a good chance that reorganization will happen at the end of September. No class is set until that time.
Combined Grades
With hard caps in primary and set averages in our junior grades combined grades are a fact of life and here to stay. As such we have become exceedingly good at teaching them and supporting them here at James Bolton. We do not structure them with the higher grade filled with low achievers and the lower grade filled with high achievers. We once again formulate a balanced class. These classes are absolutely not the “split” grades of our youth. Teachers differentiate instruction now to meet the needs of all their learners whether it is one grade or two. Your child will experience very similar learning opportunities as their same grade peers. The reality is that your child will be in a combined grade at least once in his or her academic career and will have had a richer school experience because of it. We cannot automatically exempt any child from a combined grade class.
September 6, 2011
On the first day of classes teachers will be outside with a sign. Students will find their teacher and line up outside. Various staff members will have master class lists to direct children and their parents if someone is unsure.
The Home and School and the James Bolton Administration would like to cordially invite all parents to come and join us in the gym directly following the bell for “Coffee and Kleenex”. It will be a nice adult time to catch your breath after such a busy summer and a busy start to the new school year.
Hallway Safety
We highly value our parent community and their various contributions within the school. Your efforts and support make our school a special place. You can well imagine that at any given time we have several volunteers in the school. We respectfully ask, however, that all adults enter through the front doors only. Please then sign in at the office and get a visitor badge. In this way we can account for all of the adults in our building. This is in the best interest of the safety of all of our students. We are going to be very vigilant with this, starting fresh in September. The teachers have been directed to please direct all adults to use the front door only. Please allow your child the independence of making his/her own way to class within the school. Please allow him/her the pride and dignity of getting themselves ready to start their day or packing up at the end of the day independently. Thank you in advance for your support.

Mark Your Calendars
Upcoming dates to make note of September 15, 2011 for our Open House and Community BBQ and Tuesday, September 27th, 2011 for School Re-organization Day (no school for students).
Bussing
Bussing, for those children eligible, will be posted on the front windows of the school on Thursday, September 1st, and will remain posted during the Labour Day weekend.
Please be aware that the children's eligibility for bussing may change between Kindergarten and grade 1, and also between grade 4 and grade 5.
Please take a few minutes over the summer to double check your child’s bussing information. You can obtain bussing information for your child by signing into the Geoquery website at http://businfo.stopr.ca In order to access bussing information for your child, you will need to have your child’s OEN number. This number is found on your child’s report card. Log into the Geoquery website using the student login section. Enter the school year of 2011-12, your child’s OEN number, street address, James Bolton P.S. and your child’s grade in September. If there are any discrepancies or changes, please contact the Transportation department directly at 1-800-668-1140.
If you do not live in the eligible bussing district, and you would like to apply for FUB (Fill Up the Bus) privileges, these are only put into place in October. This privilege is dependent on the number of eligible riders on the bus. Remaining spots are awarded through a youngest-first process. Please note that with changes to our bussing for 2011-12, Fill Up The Bus privileges will be severely reduced.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL IS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6th, 2011
The school office will be closed for the summer beginning Friday, July 1st, 2011. We will open again on Monday, August 29th, 2011. The office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Our School Gardens
Over the summer, our school gardens will be unattended. If you have a few minutes to stop by the school to weed and/or water our school gardens, it would be greatly appreciated.
