They have excellent opportunities for Registrars to join the Emergency Medicine Department. Applications are welcome from both UK and Non-UK based doctors. There are 2 levels of Registrar, Tier 2 Registrars and Tier 1 Senior Registrar. We recruit into both grades depending on the experience of the candidates and these posts are for a period of either 6 to 12 months with a prospect further extensions of contracts by mutual agreement and possible permanency. These posts will be mainly stationed at the emergency departments of the main hospitals; however they can also offer rotations between Emergency Medicine, Medical Assessment Unit’s, Medical Ambulatory Units and Anaesthesia as well as rotations between adult and paediatric emergency medicine. For candidates who opt for rotational posts this will be organised according to the candidate’s preference. The training they provide includes shop floor management of trauma, acute medical, surgical, psychiatry and paediatric cases. All Training will be provided by Emergency Medicine Consultant, Paediatric Emergency Medicine Consultant and Acute Medical Consultants. If you want high quality training that will enable you to fulfil the requirements for the acute care common stem (ACCS) to enable you to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia or Acute Medicine while gaining practical hands on experience in patient care in a supportive and team working environment, their Emergency Medicine Departments are likely to be the place for you to come and train. They pride themselves on the fact that numerous employees of this post have now obtained training numbers and several of them are planning on re-joining the team as Consultants. There is a dynamic teaching programme as well as mentoring and careers advice. The trust allocates adequate time and financial support to enable their doctors to attend any course the post-holder feels may be relevant to progressing their career.

Gastroenterology is a busy and thriving department providing a broad range of services for patients with all gastrointestinal disorders. Jointly led by specialist medical and surgical gastroenterologists and supported by specialist nurses in many fields, gastroenterology services include rapid access to diagnostics for patients with potential GI malignancies through endoscopy and colorectal bleed clinics. Their main hospital is a regional cancer centre for the diagnosis and treatment of upper GI malignancies and colorectal cancer. They are fully accredited for training in endoscopy, they provide assessment, treatment and continuing care for patients with all gastrointestinal and liver conditions. The Endoscopy unit is also a nominated and chosen site for the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.
The appointee will be responsible for providing appropriate inpatient cover to patients and will work with an Upper GI Consultant dealing with Upper GI Cancer & Benign Conditions. They will take part in the general On Call Rota (middle Grade) and will be working with Silver Scalpel trainer in an Upper GI Cancer Centre. They will also be expected to participate in a weekly teaching programme. The Trust will also allocate adequate time and financial support to enable doctors to attend any course the post-holder feels may be relevant to progressing their career.

Our University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a Teaching Hospital, linked to the London University and is also the Cancer Centre for South Essex which is part of the Essex Cancer network. This busy DGH serves a population of 338,800. They currently employ about 4,500 wte staff with a total complement of 190 Consultant staff. The Department of Cardiology consists of 5 Consultants, with variable special interests. There is a strong link with Essex Cardiothoracic Centre where tertiary services of PCI and surgery are provided. Each Consultant also has weekly commitment at the Cardiothoracic Centre. Cardiology is managed with an 11 bedded CCU and 19 bedded ward. Two FY1 and one FY2 doctor provides daily management of patients with supervision from a Speciality Doctor/SpR and a Consultant on a weekly basis. The Department provides state of the art facilities to perform a wide range of diagnostic investigations, including invasive coronary angiography, pacemaker implantation and ICD implants and follow up. The Department has fully established services for Nuclear Cardiology, CT based coronary angiography and advanced echocardiography including TOE and stress echo’s. Several specialist Nurse lead clinics are in place.

Diabetes and Endocrine
The diabetes and endocrine service is an active department dedicated to supporting and improving the lives of its patients. They have six diabetes and endocrine consultants across our sites, with dedicated diabetes specialist nurses. They also have a dedicated podiatry (foot care) service and some dietetic input.
There are dedicated diabetes and endocrine wards on each site with daily ward rounds from the consultants. In addition, there are general medical diabetes and endocrine specialist clinics across both sites which are as follows:
Metabolic Syndrome (hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, obesity and PCO’s
Diabetes foot problems
Thyroid and parathyroid disorders
Pituitary and adrenal disorder
We have also diabetes nurse led clinics at both hospitals in the Trust.
Joint clinics with other specialist include; foot, antenatal, transitional clinic for adolescents and your people with diabetes, and an insulin pump clinic. We also have joint endocrine clinics with dedicated consultant surgeons, a thyroid/parathyroid adrenal disorder clinic across sites, and a joint pituitary clinic, which is held with the Neuro Surgeons.
The department works in close collaboration with other consultants in different specialties and A&E to provide effective diabetes management across the trust.
There is close collaboration with our community partners and with our consultants undertaking sessional activity with locally based services.

The laboratory services are within the Diagnostic & Therapeutic Clinical Directorate. Cellular Pathology is a fully integrated department providing a comprehensive surgical pathology service, including diagnostic cytopathology, an autopsy service, breast and cervical screening services. The current workload is in the order of 21,000 requests per annum, 10% of which are from general practitioners. A wide and interesting range of biopsy material is submitted for examination, a substantial proportion of which is diagnostic work for the Trust's Cancer Centre. There is a well-developed immunohistochemistry service to support the diagnostic process, which is responsive to increasing demands from the Clinical Oncologists.
